In reply to a question from a Congress legislator, Surjakumar Okram, the CM said 85 such illegal immigrants had been deported during this period.Of those now in the state, 143 have been kept in detention centres and the rest in temporary shelter homes. The state has so far spent over Rs 85 lakh on such immigrants, Biren said.
The question of illegal immigration has taken on greater significance since the ethnic strife broke out in May last year. Biren informed the house that a committee had been constituted to verify illegal Myanmar immigrants in Churachandpur, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong and Pherzawl districts. “Before the ongoing violence broke out on May 3 last year, the committee detected 2,480 illegal Myanmar immigrants,” the CM said.
A break-up of the illegal immigrants submitted by Biren shows that most of them are in districts that share the boundary with Myanmar. Kamjong district has the majority (6,199) of illegal immigrants.
