14-Year-Old Girl Drugged and Raped by Neighbor in Gaighata: Arrest Made | Kolkata News – Times of India

KOLKATA: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly drugged and raped by a neighbour on Wednesday evening after the minor turned down his proposal for a relationship.
The incident came to light only after the survivor tried to kill herself. The youth, who is married, was arrested by Gaighata police on Thursday. The girl is undergoing treatment in Bongaon Jiban Ratan Dhar Subdivisional Hospital.
The accused, identified as Pradip Gharami, who was booked under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, was remanded in police custody for four days after being produced in a Bongaon court on Thursday.
According to locals, Gharami had been harassing the girl for almost six months. Her parents and neighbours warned him repeatedly to stay away from her.
The girl’s family alleged that on Wednesday evening, she went to attend a birthday party with her friends where the accused abused her sexually. “Gharami lured her to another room of the house with the help of another youth. She was then offered soft drinks, drugged and raped. Gharami took a fake wedding photo of her with another youth and made the photo viral on social media. Later in the night, when my daughter regained consciousness, she realised what happened. After returning home, she attempted suicide by consuming acid, after which she was admitted to Bongaon hospital,” said the survivor’s mother in her complaint.
The police arrested Gharami from his residence in the Dhakuria area in Gaighata early on Thursday morning. “The girl was sent to the hospital for her medical examination, and her statement was recorded. The police are also looking for another youth involved in the incident,” a senior officer of the Bongaon District Police said.
The incident comes barely 10 days after a 15-year-old girl returning home from her private coaching class was raped by a neighbour in Gaighata on Nov 3. The survivor also tried to kill herself after the incident.
