PATNA: A 19-year-old engineering student from Andhra Pradesh was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room at the National Institute of Technology-Patna late on Friday night. The police have also recovered a suicide note from her room.
A native of Andhra Pradesh’s Anantpur, Pallebi Reddy, who was pursuing a B.Tech in electronics and communication engineering, got admission to the institute last year.Possible reasons behind the suicide will only be revealed after a preliminary probe and completing other formalities, the police said.
City Superintendent of Police (West) Sharath RS said the police received the information about the suicide around 10.30 pm on Friday that a second-year student of NIT-Patna committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan inside her hostel room. “The police and the 112 dial team reached the spot immediately. The student was first brought to the ESIC hospital, Bihta, where the doctors declared her dead,” he told the reporters.
Sharath said the police have taken the body into custody and sent it to Danapur sub-divisional hospital for the post-mortem examination. “Pallebi’s family was informed about the incident and they left for Patna. The crime spot is being thoroughly investigated by the police probe team. A forensic team has been called to the spot to collect evidence. A suicide note was recovered and we are verifying it,” he said.
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajiv Mishra said the girl mentioned in the suicide note that she was going through mental stress. “She also mentioned her parents, brother, old school and teachers of the institute and thanked them. The police are probing the case from all angles and the actual reason behind the suicide will be ascertained after a thorough investigation,” he told TOI.
Apart from Pallebi, two other girls live in the room of Kadambini Hostel at NIT-Patna’s Bihta campus at Sikanderpur under Bihta police station area. Her friends said that she was happy throughout the day. There was no sign of worry on her face.
She sent both her roommates to the mess to have food on Friday night. When both of them returned from the mess after eating, they saw that Pallebi was hanging from the noose. After this, both of them started making noise.
Students have made allegations against the college administration, saying that on the information, the security personnel locked the room. “No one even checked her pulse. She could have been taken to the doctor immediately. We were also not allowed to go in the room,” said a girl student.
This has created uproar among the students at NIT-Patna campuses at Bihta and Ashok Rajpath under Pirbahore police station area. It was the second such incident in the institute in seven years and the first in the new campus at Bihta, where the students were shifted only last month.
