2024 US elections: Exit polls in swing states reveal Kamala Harris has slight edge over Donald Trump

The 2024 US presidential election is unfolding with significant attention on swing states, where early exit polls are providing insights into voter sentiment.
Exit polls from the 2024 presidential election in the seven swing states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — indicate a competitive race between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump, with Harris holding a slight edge.

According to preliminary results from an exit poll of the 7 states conducted by Edison Research, around 47% of voters expressed a favorable view of Kamala Harris, compared to around 45% for Donald Trump. This marks a slight shift from the 2020 election, where Trump’s favorability stood at 46%.
Here’s a summary of the latest exit poll results from key battleground states, as reported by Edison Research.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, 43% of voters expressed a favorable view of former President Donald Trump, a slight decline from 47% in the 2020 election. Conversely, 55% viewed him unfavorably, up from 51% previously. For Vice President Kamala Harris, 48% of voters reported a favorable opinion, slightly lower than the 50% who held a favorable view of President Joe Biden in 2020. Harris’s unfavorable rating increased to 50%, compared to Biden’s 47% in the last election.

Nevada

The exit poll in Nevada shows that 47% of voters have a favorable view of Trump, down from 48% in 2020. His unfavorable rating has risen to 52%, compared to 50% previously. Harris garnered a favorable view from only 44% of voters, significantly lower than Biden’s 52% in 2020, with her unfavorable rating climbing to 55%, up from 47%.

Georgia

In Georgia, Trump’s favorability remained stable at 46%, matching his 2020 performance. His unfavorable rating decreased slightly to 52% from 53%. Harris received a favorable rating of 49%, close to Biden’s previous rating of 50%, while her unfavorable rating is now at 49%, compared to Biden’s 48%.

Arizona

Arizona’s exit poll indicates that 46% of voters view Trump favorably, down from his previous rating of 48%. Harris’s favorability is also at 46%, compared to Biden’s earlier rating of 49%.

Michigan

In Michigan, Trump’s favorability remains unchanged at 45%, with an unfavorable rating steady at 53%. Harris received a favorable view from 48% of voters, down from Biden’s earlier rate of 51%, while her unfavorable rating increased to 50%, compared to Biden’s previous rate of 47%.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin voters show that Trump has a favorable view from 44%, slightly up from his previous rating of 43%. Meanwhile, Harris is viewed favorably by 47%, down from Biden’s earlier figure of 52%.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, Trump’s favorability holds steady at 47%, with an unfavorable view at 51%, slightly down from the previous year’s rate of 52%. Harris has a favorable view among only 46% of voters, compared to Biden’s earlier figure of 50%, and her unfavorable rating increased to 53%, up from Biden’s earlier rate of 49%.
These exit polls reflect shifting perceptions among voters as they head to the polls, highlighting the competitive nature of this election cycle across these pivotal states. As results continue to come in throughout Election Day, the implications for both candidates could be significant in determining the overall outcome of the election.

Why the swing states are important

These battlegrounds — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin— collectively hold 93 electoral votes, making them vital for either candidate’s path to the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the presidency.
The significance of these states lies in their historical voting patterns and their potential to swing between Democratic and Republican candidates.
For instance, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin form a trio known as the “Blue Wall”, which flipped to Trump in 2016 but was reclaimed by Biden in 2020 with narrow margins.
Winning these states is essential for Harris to solidify her chances against Trump, who aims to reclaim his former office.
