47 tiger deaths in first 103 days this year, NTCA informs SC | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: On the heels of losing 181 tigers due to various reasons last year, the country saw deaths of 47 more tigers in the first 103 days of this year, National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) informed SC in a report on status of tigers in India.
MP and Maharashtra saw the maximum tiger deaths in 2023. Of the 181 deaths reported last year, MP (43) and Maharashtra (45) accounted for almost 50% of the toll. They were followed by Uttarakhand (21), Tamil Nadu (15), Kerala (14), Karnataka (12) and Assam (10).
Of the 181 tiger deaths in 2023, only 44 died of natural causes and nine were killed by poachers. Interestingly, NTCA said that the cause of death of 115 tigers is still under scrutiny. Seven died of unnatural causes but not because of poaching while six died of seizures.
From Jan 1 till April 12 this year, of the reported 47 tiger deaths in the country, MP accounted for 17 and Maharashtra another 11, thus the two states witnessing more than 50% of the total tiger deaths across India. Karnataka reported six tiger deaths, followed by UP (3), Rajasthan, Kerala, Telangana and Uttarakhand (two each), Chhattisgarh and Odisha (one each). NTCA said the cause of death is under scrutiny.
Presenting the status report before a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati pointed out the stringent measures taken on a pan-India basis by states on the advice of NTCA to protect tiger population.
