NEW DELHI: A nine-month-old child in Ahmedabad tested positive for HMPV, taking total number of reported cases to four in Gujarat.
The infant was hospitalised at a private facility on January 6, with symptoms of cold, cough and respiratory distress. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said that the child had no travel history.
The state’s third case was reported on Friday when an eight-year-old boy from Sabarkantha district tested positive for HMPV.
Previously, an 80-year-old asthmatic patient in Ahmedabad was diagnosed with the viral infection. He is currently receiving treatment at a private healthcare facility.
The first HMPV case in Gujarat was detected on January 6, involving a two-month-old boy from Rajasthan. The infant, who exhibited symptoms including fever, nasal congestion, runny nose and cough, has since recovered and been discharged.
HMPV, identified in 2001, is part of the Paramyxoviridae family and shares similarities with the Respiratory Syncytial Virus. Transmission occurs via respiratory droplets during coughing or sneezing, contact with contaminated surfaces, or direct interaction with infected persons.
