Jagmeet Singh, Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), urged the Liberal government under Justin Trudeau to respond firmly against the proposed 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods announced by US President-elect Donald Trump and said asked to stand up and “fight like hell.”
Following Trump’s social media declaration, Singh took to X to express his concerns, stating, “Justin Trudeau, you cannot keep your head in the sand. Stand up and fight like hell. Canadian jobs are on the line.” His response came shortly after the announcement.
Trump’s proposed tariff measures are integrated into his broader initiatives targeting illegal drug trafficking and immigration.
Using his Truth Social platform, Trump detailed his intentions to implement tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. He indicated these measures would continue until both nations enhanced their efforts against illegal migration and drug trafficking.
“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border. On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” he announced.
Regarding China, Trump announced plans for a 10 percent tariff on all Chinese imports “above any additional tariffs,” citing concerns about fentanyl smuggling.
Throughout his campaign, Trump has consistently advocated for extensive tariffs on both allied and rival nations, maintaining that such measures are essential for safeguarding American employment and industrial sectors.
