NEW DELHI: A local court in Ajmer has directed to issue a notice concerning three parties in a civil suit which claims in place of the dargah of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer stood a Shiva temple.
Advocate Yogesh Siroja told news agency PTI that the suit was heard in the court of Civil Judge Manmohan Chandel.
The suit, claiming that there is a Shiva temple in the dargah, was filed in September seeking directions to start the worship in the temple again.
“Our demand was that the Ajmer dargah should be declared as Sankat Mochan Mahadev Temple and if the dargah has any kind of registration, then it should be cancelled. Its survey should be done through ASI and Hindus should be given the right to worship there,” plaintiff Vishnu Gupta said.
The lawsuit filed by Hindu Sena in an Ajmer civil court in September, demanding that the historic Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Dargah be declared ‘Bhagwan Shri Sankatmochan Mahadev Virajman Temple’ as it was built on the site of a Shiva temple, had sparked outrage among Muslims across the country, with various organisations and individuals terming it a deliberate attempt to target the community and create communal divisions.
The petition claims Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti came to Ajmer with Mohammad Ghori, (12-13th century Afghan ruler) who, after killing Prithviraj Chauhan, destroyed a large number of temples, including the Sankat Mochan Mahadev temple.
Citing books and purported “evidence”, the Hindu Sena claimed the roof design of the main entrance gate of the Ajmer shrine resembled a Hindu structure, and historical records suggested existence of a Shiva temple at the site. The next hearing is on December 20.
The development takes place days after violence that took place in Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh following a local court-ordered mosque survey.
