A very important satellite that helps us watch hurricanes is currently not working. It will be off until further notice.
GOES-19 is like the eyes in the sky for storms and weather in certain areas.
Engineers are trying to wake the satellite back up.
Important: GOES-19 is the main tool for tracking hurricanes and weather in the Atlantic and Gulf regions. While it is off, real-time storm tracking from this satellite is paused.
GOES-19, the key satellite for tracking hurricanes and weather in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, is in safehold and not working right now. NOAA announced this Thursday night and says engineers are trying to fix it. Until it is back, we will not have its live views of storms, lightning, and ocean temperatures for places like Louisiana.
What is GOES-19?
It is a satellite that watches weather from space, especially hurricanes and storms over the Atlantic and Gulf areas.
What does “safehold” mean?
It is like a safety nap for the satellite. It turns on when the machine detects a problem so it does not get hurt.
Who is fixing it?
Engineers from NOAA’s Office of Satellite Operations are working to bring it back.
Will we still get weather forecasts?
Other tools may help, but GOES-19 is the main satellite for real-time tracking in those areas, so its pause is a big deal.
