NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old man fell to his death on Saturday after allegedly opening the door of a moving Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus to spit ‘paan’ at the Purvanchal Expressway.
News agency PTI reported that the incident took place around 10:30 am near the 93-km milestone of the expressway, while the bus was en route from Azamgarh to Lucknow.
According to police, the victim, identified as Ram Jiavan from Chinhat, Lucknow, lost his balance after opening the bus door near Bihi village in the Baldirai police station area. As the bus was in motion, Jiavan fell onto the road, leading to fatal injuries.
“The passenger opened the door to spit ‘paan’ and lost his balance,” a police official confirmed.
The bus driver immediately halted the vehicle, and officials from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), along with the police, were notified. Baldirai Station House Officer (SHO) Dheeraj Kumar said that UPEIDA personnel transported Jiavan to a nearby community health centre, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Jiavan’s wife, Savitri, was also aboard the bus at the time of the accident.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the bus has been taken to the police station for further investigation.
