Imagine a building with super tight security — like a fortress for TV stars. But on Thursday morning, a man managed to sneak past that security at 30 Rockefeller Center (a big building in New York where the "Today" show is filmed) and got close to Craig Melvin, one of the show’s hosts.
According to NBC News and a law enforcement official (a person who works in the police), the man was caught by the police.
The person went into a place he wasn’t allowed to be — a small entry area (called a vestibule) near Studio 1A — and walked up to Melvin. Melvin quickly told security, and the "Today" show shared this in a statement.
Important: The individual was detained (held by police) and taken into custody (arrested) without further incident. There was no fight, and no one got hurt.
A law enforcement official told CNN that the man:

NBC released a statement that said:
Important: “TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”
This means they are working with police, checking their safety rules, and want everyone to be safe.
Several NBC workers talked to CNN and said they were shocked. Why? Because the security at 30 Rockefeller Center is usually very strong — especially now, since a World Cup Fan Zone event (a fun public soccer celebration) is happening there.
One employee said their work badge (like a VIP pass) must be swiped or checked many times just to enter the building!
The official says the man is being held at an NYPD precinct (police station) in Midtown Manhattan (the middle part of New York City).
In February, security was stepped up at the "Today" show. This happened when Savannah Guthrie’s co-hosts talked on air about her mother, Nancy, being abducted (taken away). Two people at the network shared this anonymously (without their names).
The extra safety steps were done:
Major networks like NBC have security departments that:
A man broke into a secure area at 30 Rockefeller Center, approached Craig Melvin, and was arrested without injury. He may have been looking for Al Roker, shouted a slur, and will face burglary charges. NBC is reviewing security, employees are surprised by the breach, and police are still investigating how it happened.
1. Was anyone hurt in the incident?
No. The statement said there was no altercation and no one was injured.
2. Why did the man go there?
Investigators believe he entered a secured area asking for Al Roker, then approached Melvin when he didn’t find Roker.
3. What is a racial slur?
It is a cruel word used to insult someone because of their race. Police say the man shouted one at Melvin.
4. Is the "Today" show safe now?
NBC says it takes safety very seriously, is reviewing its security steps, and is working with police to keep everyone safe.
5. Had security been increased before this event?
Yes, in February NBC added more security when hosts covered the abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, to help them feel less stressed.
