Imagine a serious story from Waterloo, Iowa. A man named Jacob Hamilton, who is 52 years old, was accused of a very bad crime — the death of another man, Zachary Drinovsky, who was 35 years old. This sad event happened in July 2024 in Black Hawk County.
Investigators (the people who look for clues) said Hamilton shot and killed Drinovsky outside the Wagon Wheel Apartments in a town called Hudson.
Hamilton said he did it in self-defense. Here is what that means and what he claimed:
But the investigators found some things that made them doubt this:
Important Point: The jury believed the smaller crime (willful injury) instead of murder, but Hamilton says he was only defending himself and the evidence does not show a break-in or struggle.
Before the judge decides his punishment, Hamilton’s lawyers sent in 11 pages of letters. These were written by his friends and family. They say Hamilton is a:
They hope these letters help the judge see him as a good man.
In Iowa, the crime Hamilton was found guilty of is called a Class C Felony. Think of a felony like a big, serious rule break.
On Friday, two things will happen:
Important Point: Even though he was convicted (found guilty), Hamilton is asking for a do-over of the trial, and the judge will consider that on the same day as sentencing.
Jacob Hamilton, 52, was accused of murdering Zachary Drinovsky in 2024 but was convicted of willful injury causing serious injury in May 2026. He claims self-defense, but police found no forced entry or struggle injuries. His family and friends sent kind letters. The crime can bring up to 10 years in prison. On Friday, a judge will give his sentence and also review his request for a new trial.
Murder is when someone purposely kills another person. Willful injury causing serious injury is when someone purposely hurts another person very badly, but the jury did not say it was murder in this case.
It means you say you hurt someone only because you were trying to protect yourself from being hurt.
They wanted the judge to know Hamilton is seen as kind and caring by people who know him, hoping it helps with his punishment.
It is a serious crime under Iowa law that can lead to up to 10 years in prison.
It is a fresh court case to look at the same situation again because the person thinks the first decision was mistaken.
