NEW DELHI: Day after Union cabinet approved the “one nation, one election” with plans to introduce these during the current session of Parliament, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said the bill needs to be deliberated before reacting to it.
Ahead of the debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha today, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused independent institutions of being misused, adding that the governance in the country is not good.
“We have put this condition that there should be a discussion on the Constitution. Many unconstitutional things are going on, many autonomous bodies are being misused, the governance in the country is not good, so we want a debate so that everyone can know how the governance is going on,” Kharge told news agency ANI.
The Union Cabinet on Thursday okayed the ‘One Nation, One Election,’ bill in the parliament, marking a step towardsstreamlining India’s electoral process.
A special debate marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution is set to begin today in the Lok Sabha. Newly elected Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is expected to deliver her maiden speech during the discussion. Defence minister Rajnath Singh is likely to initiate the debate.
The two-day event will commence at 12 noon on Friday, with over a dozen BJP leaders anticipated to participate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the debate’s conclusion on the evening of December 14.
Big guns from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including HD Kumaraswamy, Srikant Shinde, Shambhavi Chaudhary, Rajkumar Sangwan, Jiten Ram Manjhi, Anupriya Patel, and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, are expected to contribute. From the opposition, DMK leaders TR Balu and A Raja, along with Trinamool Congress MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra, are also set to participate. Both the BJP and Congress have issued three-line whips, urging their members to ensure attendance.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that the opposition supports holding a meaningful discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution.
The winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has seen early adjournments due to disruptions. The session is scheduled to continue until December 20.
