KOLKATA: A Murshidabad court sentenced one man to death and another to life imprisonment on Friday for the rape and murder of a minor girl in October. The crime, which also involved necrophilia, occurred on Vijaya Dashami, October 13. The court reached its verdict just 61 days after the incident, with the police investigation and chargesheet submission completed within 21 days.
Dinabandhu Halder received the death penalty, while Subhojit Halder was sentenced to life imprisonment. The additional sessions judge at the Jangipur court found Dinabandhu guilty of rape, murder, and necrophilia. Subhojit was convicted of assisting in the crime.
According to West Bengal Police Additional Director General Supratim Sarkar, Dinabandhu lured the girl with flowers. Sarkar confirmed the subsequent rape, murder, and the act of necrophilia committed by Dinabandhu with Subhojit’s assistance. A special investigation team ensured a swift investigation and chargesheet filing.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded to the sentencing, stating, “I have said this before, and I will say it again: Every rapist deserves nothing less than the harshest punishment – capital punishment. As a society, we must unite to eradicate this heinous social malice. I believe that swift, time-bound trials and punishments will serve as a powerful deterrent, sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated.” Banerjee also expressed her condolences to the victim’s family and praised the police and prosecution.
This sentencing follows another recent case in Joynagar, South 24 Parganas, where Mostakin Sardar received the death penalty on December 6 for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl. That verdict was delivered 62 days after the girl’s body was discovered on October 4.
Meanwhile, Every rapist deserves nothing less than capital punishment Former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh was granted bail by Sealdah court on Friday. Along with Ghosh, Tala police station’s former officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal was also granted bail.
The relief for the two came as the Central Bureau of India (CBI) failed to file a chargesheet within 90 90-day period.
