NEW DELHI: It was the lunch interval in Brisbane on Day 2 of the third Test and the crowd was out on the streets to spread their legs and grab a quick bite. After an even and gripping session, discussions were underway on how Steve Smith is beginning to look good, and could well get a big one at The Gabba.
Not too far away from live action, a batch of Indian players were sweating it out in the nets under the eyes of assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. Harshit Rana and Prasid Krishna had the ball and the likes of Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan were swapping nets for brief hits.

Both coaches were using the side-arm for throwdowns and were very chatty with the youngsters who weren’t part of the Playing XI for the ongoing third India-Australia Test. While Padikkal played the opening fixture of the series, Sarfaraz is yet to get a game and was fine-tuning his back-foot play with Nayar. There was healthy banter and constant chatter between the two Mumbaikars.

Towards the fag end of the session, when play was about to resume, Australia coach Daniel Vettori, with his big baseball glove on, decided to roll his arm over to Sarfaraz in the corner-most net. The right-hander comfortably dealt with the loopy deliveries and Vettori was off to the ground.
Sarfaraz continued facing side-arm music and looked a bit uncomfortable against the deliveries rising from the good-length spot. Nayar continued to fire them from the spot and the youngster soon made the quick adjustment to comfortably deal them off the backfoot later in the session. Anything pitched up was severely dealt with by both Padikkal and Sarfaraz, and the Indian entourage quickly winded up to reach the change room in time for the first delivery of the second session.
Excellent turnout in Brisbane
Even though only 80 deliveries were possible on the opening day due to strong showers, the crowd came out in big numbers for the second day and all public tickets were sold out.
There was equal support for both sides from the stands and the constant boos, oohs, aahs and cheers contributed towards an excellent atmosphere in the stadium. On the opening day as well, the official attendance at The Gabba was 30,145.
