Jasprit Bumrah continues to leave his mark in Australia, earning respect of not just his teammates but also the opposition camp, which has openly expressed admiration for the Indian spearhead. But the Aussie batters, barring one, have so far failed to figure out ways to score runs against the 31-year-old right-arm pacer.
Bumrah has taken 21 wickets already in three Tests, and there are still two Tests left to be played in the five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy. And even though Melbourne and Sydney are not venues that will support pacers throughout the match, one will have to bet against Bumrah at his own peril.
India’s tormentor Travis Head is the only batter in this Australia squad able to summon his skills and score against Bumrah, who has taken two five-fors and a four-wicket haul, with a best of 6 for 76.
His 21 wickets have come at a staggering average of 10.90 and with an economy rate of 2.60; and had it not been for Head, the runs conceded per over could well have been under two.
A graphic shared by Channel 7 on X shows how many times Bumrah has dismissed Australia’s top 7 batters in the three Tests of the series and how many runs each of those batters has scored against him.
Bumrah has bowled the most deliveries, 91, to Head; and the left-hander has smashed 83 runs of those and gotten out twice.
Among the remaining six batters, none has scored more than 20 runs against Bumrah, while openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney have proved to be the bunnies of India’s vice-captain, who has dismissed them four times each.
Smith has scored 20 runs in 54 balls and has been dismissed by Bumrah three times.
Like before the previous three Tests, Australia have some serious homework to do to solve the Bumrah riddle while preparing for the crucial fourth Test at the MCG, beginning December 26.
The series is well poised at 1-1 after India won the first Test in Perth, Australia clinched the second in Adelaide and the third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw.
