Texas representative Kay Granger, who has been missing votes in Washington for the past six months, is reportedly residing in a local memory care facility. She has been absent from Congressional votes since July 24, 2024.
The longest-serving Republican representative has been living in a memory care facility for the past six months, according to a report by The Dallas Express.
The Dallas Express investigated Granger’s absence, finding her district office closed and calls unanswered. Staff at the WestBend building, where Granger’s district office is located, said that her team had packed up and closed the office before Thanksgiving.
A constituent tipped off the publication that Granger had been living at a local memory care and assisted living facility after she was found wandering, disoriented, and confused in her former Cultural District/West 7th neighborhood, the report said. Two employees of the facility also confirmed Granger’s residency. However, the publication was not permitted to interview Granger about her voting plans.
The facility’s assistant executive director, Taylor Manziel, told The Dallas Express, “This is her home.”
Officials raise concerns over Granger’s absence
Granger’s absence has raised concerns among constituents and local officials, particularly given crucial votes on interim spending bills and other legislative matters.
Tarrant County Republican chairman Bo French expressed his concern to The Dallas Express, saying: “The lack of representation for CD-12 is troubling to say the least. At a time when extraordinarily important votes are happening, including the debt ceiling, disaster relief, farm bills, and border issues, Kay Granger is nowhere to be found. The margin in Congress is razor-thin, and the lack of a Republican vote representing CD-12 disenfranchises 2 million people. We deserve better.”
Tarrant County resident Hollie Plemons also voiced concerns about the situation, saying: “We need someone there with their full capacities. Swear Craig in early. That’s the solution. That’s the right thing to do. She just missed a big vote. It wasn’t won or lost on one vote, but we still have to protect our country. It’s not about hurt feelings. She’s a public servant; we’ve thanked her for her service, but now she needs to resign.”
Social media’s reaction to Granger’s absence
Apart from officials, social media users have also expressed concern over Granger’s absence. One user, Fairfighter, posted on X, “I’m hearing she’s in a memory care unit. We need to have standards. Representatives who miss 3 votes in a row without announcing a legitimate medical reason should have their salaries and benefits frozen. This has to stop!”
Granger’s last recorded vote
Granger’s last recorded vote was on July 24, 2024, against an amendment related to a salary reduction for a government official. She is due to retire at the end of her current term.
