NEW DELHI: As excavation work progressed in Sambhal on Monday following the discovery of a stepwell, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav remarked that the BJP’s continuous searches could eventually lead to the downfall of their own government.
“They will keep searching like this and one day, by digging and digging, they will end up digging their own government,” Akhilesh remarked.
On Sunday, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) team unearthed the stepwell in Chandausi, Sambhal district.
District magistrate Rajendra Pensiya confirmed the finding of the ‘baoli’ (stepwell), which spans 400 square metres and features four chambers with marble flooring.
“The structure, which has around four chambers, includes floors made of marble and bricks. The second and third floors are made of marble, while the upper floors are built from bricks,” Pensiya explained. He further noted, “This baoli is said to have been built during the time of the grandfather of Bilari’s king.”
The discovery coincided with the reopening of a Shiv-Hanuman temple in the area, which had remained closed for 46 years. Pensiya estimated the stepwell to be over 150 years old.
Municipal Corporation Executive Officer Krishna Kumar Sonkar stated, “As soon as we learned that there was a baoli here, we started the excavation work. We will continue the work as we learn more about it.”
In another development, an ASI team surveyed the Kalki Vishnu temple in Sambhal, inspecting five shrines and 19 wells. Pensiya mentioned that the inspection lasted 8-10 hours, covering approximately 24 locations.
“ASI will submit its report to us a total of around 24 areas were surveyed,” Pensiya said.
