NEW DELHI: Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Tuesday cautioned that a violent anti-government protest similar to those in Bangladesh could potentially occur in India, despite the appearance of normalcy on the surface.
Speaking at a book launch event, the former Union minister said, “Everything may look normal in Kashmir. Everything may look normal here.We may be celebrating the victory, although some people believe that victory or success in 2024 was perhaps only marginal, and a lot more needs to be done.”
“The fact remains that beneath the surface, there is something,” he said.
“What’s happening in Bangladesh could happen here… the spread in our country prevents things from blowing up in the manner they have in Bangladesh,” he added.
Khurshid also mentioned that the CAA-NRC protests, spearheaded by women in Southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh and which continued for nearly 100 days, inspired similar demonstrations across the country. He referred to it as a failed agitation since many participants are still in jail.
He added that another agitation like Shaheen Bagh could not take place in the country today.
“Do you mind if I say that Shaheen Bagh failed? A lot of us believe that Shaheen Bagh succeeded. But I know what’s happening to the people associated with Shaheen Bagh. How many of them are still in prison? How many of them can’t get bail? How many of them are being labeled as enemies of this country?” he said.
“If I ask myself whether there would be a repeat of Shaheen Bagh, I’m not sure there would be because people have really suffered,” he added.
Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation, with Sheikh Hasina tendering her resignation on August 5 amid mounting protests. The protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, have evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations.
