How a metal rod foiled bid to replicate ‘heist of the century’ – Times of India

In San Isidro, Argentina, authorities announced on Thursday that they had thwarted a potential bank robbery reminiscent of the infamous 2006 “heist of the century.”
The discovery was made when a parked driver heard a noise caused by a metal rod emerging from the cobblestone street.
Police arrived at the scene and excavated the area, revealing a tunnel originating from a warehouse approximately 220 meters away from a Macro bank branch. The tunnel was well-constructed, featuring wooden lining, ventilation, and electric lighting.
It ended just short of the bank’s entrance. The construction of the tunnel was estimated to have taken between six and nine months, and investigators praised its engineering as superior to the one used by “El Chapo Guzman” to escape from prison in Mexico in 2015.
Despite the elaborate nature of the tunnel, the would-be robbers have not been found. The incident drew comparisons to the 2006 “heist of the century,” which took place in the same upscale neighbourhood.
In that robbery, criminals meticulously planned and executed a theft of nearly $19 million from a bank, escaping through a tunnel.
The robbers used toy weapons and left a note in the vault that read “In a neighbourhood of rich people, with no weapons or grudges, it’s just money.” The 2006 heist has since inspired numerous books, TV series, and films.
