ELI5 Definition: An edge rusher is a defensive player who lines up on the outside of the defensive line. Their main job? Get past the offensive tackles and sack the quarterback (tackle him behind the line of scrimmage) or stop running plays that go to the outside. Think of them as the "speed rushers" who come flying off the edge!
The Eagles’ edge rusher room looked very different a few months ago. Here’s the quick timeline:
IMPORTANT: This Spot Is Locked In
Greenard is unquestionably the starter. The Eagles paid him like a superstar, and he’s earned it:
- Age: 29
- 2023-2024: 24.5 sacks combined
- Pro Bowler two years ago
- 2025 was a "down year" but the track record is elite
Bottom line: Greenard is QB1 at edge rusher. Everyone else is fighting for spots 2, 3, and 4.
Two young Eagles are going head-to-head for the starting job opposite Greenard.

The rollercoaster story:
Key Insight: Hunt and Smith aren’t just fighting for a starting spot — they might be competing for the same future contract extension!
The 4th edge rusher spot is a classic "different flavors" competition.
The Contrast: Ebiketie = speed/pass rush specialist | Epenesa = power/run defense specialist. The Eagles get to choose what they value more for that 4th spot.
| Player | Profile | Shot at Roster? |
|---|---|---|
| Keyshawn James-Newby | Rookie, 7th round, 23 yrs old, 9 sacks in ’25 at New Mexico | Special teams ace — if he shines there, he sticks |
| Jose Ramirez | CFL player (Hamilton Tigercats) | Practice squad candidate |
| Joshua Weru | International Player Pathway (Kenya) | Practice squad candidate — ranked #2 in IPP class |
| Uar Bernard | Draft pick, great story | Developmental project |
The Elephant in the Room: Brandon Graham — the legendary Eagle isn’t under contract but wants back for Year 17. Never count out a legend!

The Eagles have depth, youth, and competition — exactly what you want at a premium position. Camp can’t come fast enough!
Simple answer: Money. The Eagles had a maximum number they were willing to pay. The Panthers offered $30 million per year — that was above Philly’s "walkaway number." The Eagles refused to overpay and moved to Plan B (Greenard).
He’s legitimately good. Look at the resume: 24.5 sacks in two seasons (2023-24), Pro Bowl selection, and he’s only 29. 2025 was a down year, but the track record says he’s a top-tier edge rusher. The contract matches the production.
Absolutely. He led the team with 6.5 sacks as a rotational player in Year 2. He also had 3 interceptions — showing insane athleticism for a pass rusher. If he gets full-time snaps and makes another Year 2→3 leap? 10+ sacks is very realistic.
Size + Style = Risk. At 238 pounds, Smith is tiny for an NFL edge rusher. But he plays with maximum violence and effort ("like a maniac"). That combination — undersized + reckless style — leads to injuries. The triceps issue from the Super Bowl lingered all 2025. If he can’t stay healthy, the talent doesn’t matter.
It happens more than you think. Players agree to terms, take a physical, and sometimes teams find something they don’t like (old injury, degenerative condition, etc.). The Browns backed out. The Eagles — who know their own medical staff — signed him anyway. That suggests Philly’s doctors cleared him and they’re comfortable with the risk.
Maybe not as a full-time player, but as a rotational piece and leader? Absolutely. Graham is an Eagles legend (franchise record for games played). Even at 37, his technique, motor, and locker room presence have value. But he’d need to accept a reduced role and veteran minimum salary. The door is open if he wants it.
