1Imagine showing up to your first day of school, putting your backpack in your cubby, but then sitting at your desk refusing to do any work until you get a better allowance. That’s basically what’s happening with Jahmyr Gibbs and the Detroit Lions right now.
On Wednesday—the very first day of training camp—Gibbs showed up to the facility (the Lions even posted a photo to prove it), but he didn’t practice. Reporters on the scene confirmed he was present but not participating.
Important Point
This is called a "hold-in"—not a "hold-out." A hold-out means a player refuses to show up at all. A hold-in means: "I’m here, I’m technically reporting, but I’m not working until we agree on a new contract."
Think of Gibbs like a video game character who came with maxed-out stats right out of the box.
He wants a new contract—and he’s earned it.
Think of it like this:
You’re the best player on your rec league team. You show up to games, but you refuse to scrimmage in practice until the league agrees to give you the "MVP bonus" you deserve.
| Term | What It Means | Risk to Player |
|---|---|---|
| Hold-Out | Player doesn’t show up at all. | Fines, lost service time, bad PR. |
| Hold-In | Player reports (shows up) but doesn’t practice/play. | Avoids fines, keeps service time, sends message. |
Gibbs chose the smart route: He protects his paycheck and pension credit (called "accrued seasons") while still applying pressure.
Why doesn’t he just play on his current contract?
His rookie deal pays him way less than his market value. Top RBs now get $15M+/year. He’d risk injury for pennies on the dollar.
Can the Lions fine him?
Not for a hold-in. Since he reported, he avoids mandatory minicamp fines (~$100K/day). Smart move by his agent.
Will this hurt the team?
Short-term: Backup RBs get valuable reps. Long-term: Only a problem if it drags into September.
How good is he really?
Elite. One of maybe 3–4 RBs who genuinely change how a defense plays every snap. He’s a matchup nightmare—linebacker can’t cover him, safety can’t tackle him alone.
When will we know the outcome?
Could be days, could be weeks. Most star extensions get done before Week 1. Stay tuned!
