Think of leafy greens like spinach, romaine, and kale as nature’s multivitamin. They’re packed with good stuff your body loves:
IMPORTANT POINT: Scientists agree – salads are one of the healthiest things you can eat. Don’t stop eating them just because of a germ outbreak!
Right now, there’s a big stomach bug going around caused by a tiny parasite called Cyclospora (say: sy-klo-SPOR-uh). Here are the scary numbers:

You know those bags that say "triple washed" or "ready to eat"? They’re super convenient – just open and eat! And normally, they’re pretty safe. Millions of bags get eaten every year without problems.
But here’s the catch: "Pre-washed" does NOT mean "germ-free."
Imagine a factory assembly line for lettuce:
Every single step is a chance for germs to hop on!
IMPORTANT POINT: One dirty leaf can spread germs to thousands of other leaves in the wash water and on the equipment. Cut leaves also leak "plant juice" that helps bacteria grow faster.
This particular parasite is extra tricky:
That’s why preventing contamination at the farm is the only real way to stop it.
Think of a whole head of lettuce like a fortress. It goes through way fewer steps:
Whole Head Path: Farm → Harvest → Truck → Store → Your Kitchen
Bagged Path: Farm → Harvest → Chop → Wash → Belt → Bag → Truck → Store → Your Kitchen
Fewer steps = fewer chances for germs to jump on.
Produce from local farms or farmers markets is even safer because:
Follow these three simple rules and you can keep enjoying all those health benefits:
| DO | DON’T |
|---|---|
| Eat lots of leafy greens – they’re amazing for you | Stop eating salads out of fear |
| Buy whole heads of lettuce when possible | Assume "pre-washed" means sterile |
| Rinse everything under running water | Use soap, bleach, or produce washes (water works best!) |
| Support local farmers | Eat recalled products (check FDA.gov) |
| Dry your greens before storing | Leave wet greens in the bag (moisture = germ party) |
Remember: The health benefits of eating fresh veggies far outweigh the small risk of getting sick – especially when you follow these simple habits!
Nope! Research shows cool running water works just as well (or better) than vinegar, baking soda, or fancy produce washes. Save your money – the tap is free!
Not necessarily. "Organic" means grown without synthetic pesticides, but it doesn’t guarantee fewer germs. Organic farms can still have contamination from water, animals, or handling. Wash it all the same way.
Yes, cooking kills Cyclospora (and most other bugs). But… cooked salad isn’t really a thing. If you’re immunocompromised or extra worried, sautéing greens is a safe option. For everyone else – just wash well and enjoy raw!
Check FDA.gov/recalls or FoodSafety.gov regularly. You can also sign up for email alerts. When in doubt – throw it out!
