Imagine a TV show about a boxer from London who gets mixed up with dangerous criminals. That’s Fightland in a nutshell!
Important Point: Fightland is a new drama series on Starz that mixes boxing with London’s criminal underworld. It premiered on Friday, July 31.
The show has two sets of creators working together:
Think of it like: Two different cooking teams trying to make one meal together. Sometimes that works great, sometimes the flavors clash.
| Actor | Character | Simple Description |
|---|---|---|
| Howard Charles | Duke Kilroy | Our hero — a London boxer who wins a world title |
| Deborah Ayorinde | Joy | Duke’s girlfriend (but there’s a catch!) |
| Nicholas Pinnock | Kingsley Marshall | Duke’s manager AND a secret drug kingpin |
| Charles Babalola | Zeek | Kingsley’s son, now running the family business |
| Anita-Joy Uwajeh | Cebella | Kingsley’s daughter, also running things |
| Richard Pepple | Gazzer | Duke’s dad, owns a boxing gym |
| Tyler Conti | Jay | Duke’s longtime friend |
| Tahirah Sharif | Kim | A ring girl with a secret |
| Clarke Peters | Promoter | A boxing promoter (brief appearances) |
The reviewer says Fightland feels like a mashup of these popular shows:
The Problem: It borrows from all of them but doesn’t add anything new or special. It’s like a "greatest hits" album where none of the songs are the original versions.
| What Works | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Howard Charles as Duke | He brings "glowering intensity" — you believe he’s tough |
| Clarke Peters | Even in small scenes, he adds class (the reviewer calls it "inherent Clarke Peters-ness") |
| Boxing gym scenes | Duke’s dad Gazzer’s gym feels real and lived-in |
| Episode 5 surprise | Several "important" characters die in entertaining action scenes |
| Potential | Last two episodes might bring boxing back to center stage |
"Far from a knockout."
| Watch If… | Skip If… |
|---|---|
| You love Power and want more of that vibe | You want fresh, original storytelling |
| You’re a Howard Charles fan | You hate "PG-13" versions of adult stories |
| You’ll watch anything with boxing + crime | You want deep characters & surprising plots |
| You’re curious about the Power creators’ non-Power work | You’ve seen Gangs of London / Peaky Blinders / The Gentlemen and want something better |
No. It’s made by Power writers (Macedon & Jackson), and it has that Power "soapy melodrama + crime empire" DNA, but it’s a completely separate story with new characters in London.
Eight total. Critics got the first six. The reviewer hints the last two might focus more on boxing.
Barely. He’s in the pilot, then disappears for most of the six episodes sent to critics. The reviewer says his "absence is felt" — he was the most lively adversary.
Surprisingly mild. The reviewer expected Gangs of London-level intensity but got "borderline-PG-13." Violence = routine. Sex = repetitive formula. It’s adult-themed but not visceral or raw.
Not in the first six episodes. The sports betting subplot (Cebella’s idea) is the closest boxing gets to driving the story, but it’s "barely an afterthought." The finale episodes might change this.
Fightland is like ordering a spicy curry and getting mild korma — all the ingredients sound right (boxing, London gangs, Power writers, great cast), but the flavor just isn’t there. It’s not terrible — just forgettable in a crowded genre.
TL;DR: Watch Gangs of London, The Gentlemen, or Power instead. They do everything Fightland tries to do — but better, bolder, and with more personality.
