Think of Pat Narduzzi like a teacher who has been at the same school for a really long time. He has been the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) for 11 years. In college football, that is a long time. In fact, going into 2026, he is the 6th longest-tenured coach in the top level of college football (called the FBS).
Important Point: Loyalty Matters
Narduzzi says, "I’m a loyal guy. I like loyal players — loyalty’s everything." He wants to stay at Pitt and build a lasting legacy there, rather than jumping to a new job every few years.
Some people criticize Narduzzi. Their main argument? The win total.
The other side: Staying at one school for 11+ years and consistently winning 7+ games is actually pretty hard to do! The debate will continue, but one fact is clear: He isn’t going anywhere.
Mark your calendars! The season kicks off soon.
A football team has many assistant coaches. This year, Narduzzi’s staff is a mix of familiar faces and new hires.
| Coach | Role | Previous Stop / Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cory Sanders | Defensive Coordinator (DC) | Longtime Pitt assistant; promoted to run the whole defense. |
| Harlon Barnett | Safeties Coach | New to Pitt. |
| Joe Bowen | Linebackers Coach | New to Pitt. |
| Mike Priefer | Special Teams Coach | New to Pitt. |
| Brent Davis | Tight Ends Coach | New to Pitt. |
Mason Heintschel is the guy. He is a sophomore (2nd year player).
ELI5: What is a "True Freshman"?
A player in their very first year of college, playing real games immediately (not sitting out a "redshirt" year to practice). It’s rare for a QB to start this early and succeed.
These are the big guys who block for the QB.
| Position | Player | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Center | Ryan Carretta | Returning |
| Right Guard | B.J. Williams | Returning |
| Right Tackle | Ryan Baer | Returning |
| Left Guard | Kendall Stanley | Returning (Most Improved in Spring!) |
| Left Tackle | Netinho Olivieri | NEW Transfer from Penn (Ivy League) |
Why Olivieri matters: He protects the QB’s blind side (the side the QB can’t see when looking downfield). He was a two-time All-Ivy League player. He is 6’4", 310 lbs. This is a huge pickup.
Many top catchers from last year graduated or transferred away.
They return three proven starters. This is the engine of the defense.
They lost two great players (Kyle Louis, Rasheem Biles).
Important Point: Competition Everywhere
Narduzzi says "plenty of positions up for grabs." Fall camp is basically a tryout for starting spots.
Heintschel laid it out simply:
But the coach’s mantra: "We’ve got to take this one game at a time."
FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision. It is the highest level of college football (the big schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Pitt, etc.). There are about 134 teams in it.
Think of it like free agency in pro sports, but for college players. Players can enter a database, say "I want to leave my school," and other schools can recruit them. Pitt used this to get Netinho Olivieri, Alex Sanford, DeMarco Ward, and Malik Knight.
Most QBs are right-handed. When they turn to throw, their back is to the left side. They cannot see defenders coming from that side. The Left Tackle protects that "blind side." If he fails, the QB gets crushed unexpectedly.
The ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) is Pitt’s conference (group of teams they play regularly). The winner of the championship game gets an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff (the 12-team tournament to decide the national champion).
It is preseason practice. In August, before classes start, the team practices multiple times a day, puts on full pads, hits each other, and the coaches decide the Depth Chart (who is 1st string, 2nd string, etc.) for Week 1.
