Cockroach infestation found in kitchens of Hyderabad restaurants

HYDERABAD: Despite numerous drives to improve food quality and safety standards, many restaurants and hotels continue to have unsanitary conditions. These establishments appear resistant to change, with the presence of pests and use of expired ingredients rampant in their kitchens, said food safety inspectors.
At Kayal Kerala restaurant at DLF food street in Gachibowli, live cockroach infestation was found in store room.The doors of the room were also found to be open to outside premises without any barrier. Windows and doors were not closely fitted with insect proof screens and dustbins were found, said officials who inspected the premises.
Similarly, at Hotel Manohar in Begumpet, food inspectors discovered stagnant water in the kitchen drains and improperly labelled food items. The kitchen staff had covered raw and semi-prepared food articles but failed to label them correctly. Furthermore, spoiled vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, onions, and coriander were found and subsequently discarded. Live cockroach infestation was also observed in the kitchen and store room.
At New Urvasi Bar and Restaurant, Begumpet, synthetic food colours suspected of being used in non-veg starters were discarded.
