Imagine your favorite baseball team is suddenly winning a lot. They’ve gone from struggling to one of the hottest teams in baseball. Now, the trade deadline is coming up—the last chance to add new players for the playoff push. The boss (Craig Breslow) has a huge decision to make: trade away the team’s most prized young talent for a proven star, or keep the kid and hope the current guys figure it out.
That’s exactly where the Boston Red Sox stand right now.
| Year | Deadline Moves | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Got 3 pitchers (Paxton, Garcia, Sims) | All got hurt, didn’t help |
| 2024 | Got 2 pitchers (May, Matz) | Barely contributed |
| This Year | Traded for Curtis Mead | Broke wrist in Game 1 |
IMPORTANT POINT: Breslow’s offseason trades have worked well. His deadline trades? Not so much. This time, he seems ready to swing bigger.
Meet the 20-year-old shortstop everyone wants.
The Red Sox need a shortstop now and for years to come. Here are the targets:
RIVAL EXEC OPINION: "Red Sox might only trade Arias for Abrams."
| Player | Status | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Trevor Story | Sports hernia (since May) | 1+ month away |
| Marcelo Mayer | Forearm stress reaction | 1+ month away |
| Isiah Kiner-Falefa | Forearm stress reaction | 1+ month away |
| Andruw Monasterio | Filling in (.770 OPS) | Not a long-term answer |
The Story Problem: Signed through 2027, but played 1 full season in 6 years due to injuries. If they get a new SS, where does Story go? Second base? But Mead is the future 2B. And Mayer needs a spot too!
Since 2017, only ONE top-5 prospect has been traded at the deadline:
Baseball America currently ranks Arias #3 overall.
Option A: Keep Arias
Option B: Trade for Abrams
Option C: Trade for Neto/Lopez
The Red Sox are legitimate contenders after a historic July. Craig Breslow has a chance to cement this turnaround with a bold deadline move. Their top prospect, Franklin Arias, is the currency to buy a controllable shortstop — likely CJ Abrams or nobody. But Abrams comes with defensive red flags, and trading a top-5 prospect at the deadline is nearly unprecedented. Meanwhile, the current shortstop trio (Story, Mayer, Kiner-Falefa) is all injured, leaving Andruw Monasterio as a nice story but not the future.
Deadline: Monday 6 PM ET.
He’s a 20-year-old shortstop hitting .318 with 19 HR in Double-A. Ranked #4 prospect in baseball. Young, cheap, and raking — the perfect trade chip.
He’s still developing, and they might not want to rush a 20-year-old into a playoff race. Also, they’ve started him at 2B recently, suggesting they may not see him as their long-term SS.
He’s -13 Outs Above Average at shortstop — meaning he costs his team 13 outs compared to an average SS. That’s really bad. But his bat might make up for it.
Offseason: Yes. Trade deadline: No. His last two deadline hauls (2023, 2024) produced almost nothing. This year he traded for Curtis Mead, who broke his wrist in Game 1.
Monday, 6:00 PM ET. That’s when all deals must be finalized.
