Imagine the Moon playing a game of "peek-a-boo" with the Sun. On August 12, 2026, the Moon will slide right between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s light for a few magical minutes. This is called a total solar eclipse.
It’s the first of three eclipses coming to Spain over the next two years. Because this one happens in the evening in Spain, viewers there will get a rare bonus: a "sunset eclipse" where a crescent-shaped Sun sets right after the total eclipse ends.

IMPORTANT: NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN WITH YOUR NAKED EYES!
Not even for a second. Not even if it’s mostly covered. The Sun’s invisible rays (infrared and ultraviolet) can cook the sensitive cells in your retina—the part of your eye that sees light. This damage is called solar retinopathy.
- It can cause permanent blindness or blurry vision.
- There is no treatment to fix it.
- In 2017, a young woman damaged both eyes using glasses that looked safe but weren’t certified.
- Regular sunglasses are NOT enough. They block UV for daily life, but they let through way too much light for staring at the Sun.
You need certified solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. These are 100,000 times darker than sunglasses.
Don’t guess! Use the American Astronomical Society’s (AAS) vetted list of safe manufacturers and resellers:

Follow these steps every single time you look up:
Supervise kids constantly. Make sure they don’t peek around the frames.
Wear prescription glasses? Keep them on. Put the eclipse glasses over them, or hold a handheld viewer in front of them.

Absolutely not. Sunglasses do not block the invisible infrared radiation that burns your retina. Stacking them doesn’t help. You need the special black polymer material in certified viewers.
Yes, but ONLY during "Totality." This is the brief minute or two when the Moon completely covers the bright face of the Sun. The instant you see a tiny bead of bright light reappear (the "Diamond Ring"), put your glasses back on immediately.
Yes! As long as they are ISO 12312-2 certified and have no scratches, tears, or loose frames, they are safe to use indefinitely. The "3-year expiration" warning is outdated.
Only if you don’t look at the Sun. Point your phone camera away from your face. Do not look through the phone screen to frame the shot without a proper solar filter on the camera lens—the concentrated light can damage the phone sensor and your eye if you peek.
Welding filters (Shade 12+) are designed for welding arcs, not the Sun’s color temperature. They transmit light differently, making the Sun appear green. It’s safe (if shade 12+), just a different color!
