‘Like being hit …’: How Matthew Perry described Ketamine experience in his memoir – Times of India

Late actor Matthew Perry, in his 2022 memoir, ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing’, vividly described his experiences with ketamine therapy by comparing it to “being hit in the head with a giant happy shovel.”
This information has surfaced following Perry’s passing last year, which has led to legal investigations and charges, as reported by People magazine.Matthew Perry, the beloved actor known for his role in the hit sitcom “Friends,” passed away on October 28, 2023 and the cause of his death was attributed to complications arising from his use of ketamine and the subsequent drowning.
In his writings, Perry openly discussed his struggles with depression and how he turned to ketamine as a means of managing his condition. Perry’s affinity for the drug was so strong that he said ketamine had “my name written all over it, they might as well have called it ‘Matty.”
“Ketamine felt like a giant exhale,” Perry wrote in his memoir, the People magazine reported.
The actor recounted his therapy sessions, where he received ketamine and Ativan containing IV drip. During these sessions, Perry would spend an hour in a dimly lit room, immersed in music played through headphones, as he experienced profound feelings of dissociation.
Perry described his sessions stating, “I would disassociate, see things — I’d been in therapy for so long that I wasn’t even freaked out by this. Oh, there’s a horse over there? Fine — might as well be.” During these sessions, he experienced sensations of ego dissolution and often believed he was dying.
Although he initially found the effects enjoyable, Perry eventually concluded that ketamine was not suitable for him. He criticised the “rough” hangover and said he felt like “a f—ing pincushion” from the treatment.
On Perry’s final day, he repeatedly asked for ketamine. He reportedly asked his assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa to provide him with multiple doses of ketamine on October 28 which ultimately led to his death.
As a result of the investigation into Perry’s passing, five individuals are now facing charges, including two medical professionals, Mark Chavez and Salvador Plasencia, who stand accused of providing Perry with ketamine.
According to prosecutors, Chavez allegedly obtained ketamine through a fraudulent prescription and subsequently sold it to Plasencia. Furthermore, Jasveen Sangha, known as “The Ketamine Queen,” is alleged to have supplied Perry with the dose of ketamine that led to his death.
United States Attorney Martin Estrada criticised the defendants and said, “In the end, these defendants were more interested in profiting off Mr Perry than caring for his well-being.”
In a previous interview with People magazine, Perry had expressed his intention to share his story once he was confident in his sobriety, believing that his experience could benefit others, “I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side again,” he said.
