Activision has officially confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — the 23rd main game in the franchise — will launch on October 23, 2026. It’s a direct sequel to the Modern Warfare sub-series developed by Infinity Ward.
But that’s not all — insiders say the entire franchise is getting a major shake-up starting in 2027.

Modern Warfare 4 introduces three major technical upgrades:
ELI5: In older games, shooting from the hip (without aiming down sights) felt stiff and unrealistic. The new system makes it feel natural and responsive, like you’re actually holding the gun.
| Platform | Supported? |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes |
| Xbox Series X/S | Yes |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes |
| PC (Steam/Battle.net) | Yes |
| PlayStation 4 | No |
| Xbox One | No |
Important: Previous-generation consoles (PS4, Xbox One) are completely excluded from development. This game is built only for current & next-gen hardware.
Callout: This is a BIG deal.
According to insiders, the 2027 Call of Duty game will completely drop the "Black Ops" and "Modern Warfare" names. Instead, it’s launching an entirely new sub-series — built from the ground up for next-next-gen hardware (think PlayStation 6 / next Xbox).
A: It’s a direct sequel to the recent Modern Warfare trilogy (2019, 2022, 2023), made by the same studio (Infinity Ward).
A: Yes — digital pre-orders get immediate access to the open beta right after the August 21 livestream. Physical pre-orders may have different timing.
A: The new physics, parkour, and skill systems require the SSD speed, CPU power, and RAM of current-gen consoles. Last-gen hardware can’t handle it.
A: Almost certainly yes — "Call of Duty" is the master brand. But the sub-title (like "Black Ops" or "Modern Warfare") is being retired for something brand new.
A: If you want to play Modern Warfare 4 this year, you need current-gen hardware. The 2027 game might be a PS6 launch title — but that’s unconfirmed and over a year away.
Final Thought: Modern Warfare 4 looks like a technical showcase for current-gen consoles — but the real revolution might be what comes after it. Stay tuned for the August 21 livestream!
