The Big News: A New Weather Watcher Arrives in Fort Myers
Imagine trying to watch a soccer game, but there’s a big blind spot right in front of the goal. You’d miss the most important plays! That’s exactly what was happening with weather radar in Lee County—until now.
On July 31, Lee County Government announced that their partner, Climavision, has finished installing the very first "gap-filling" weather radar system in Florida. It sits right on top of the Lee County Public Safety Center at 2675 Ortiz Ave., Fort Myers.
Important Point: This is the first system of its kind to go live in the entire state of Florida!
Why Did We Need a New Radar? (The "Blind Spot" Problem)
You might wonder: "Don’t we already have weather radars?" Yes, we do! The National Weather Service (NWS) uses giant, powerful radars called NEXRAD S-Band radars. They are amazing at seeing storms far away.
But here is the catch:
- The Earth is Curved: Radar beams shoot out in a straight line. As the beam travels further from the radar, the Earth curves away underneath it.
