KOLHAPUR: A 23-year-old man from Satara in Maharashtra has been arrested and booked on the charge of abetting the suicide of a 17-year-old college student he was accused of abducting and raping last year.
The girl was also from Satara, but had moved to Dahiwadi with her mother and was pursuing junior college there. Her family alleged she was driven to suicide because of constant harassment by the accused.
Police said the girl and the youth had known each other for six years. In Oct 2023, a case was filed against the man on charges of abducting and raping the teen. After spending three months in jail, he came out on bail. “We found out that after getting bail, he again contacted the girl and started harassing her. Upset, she took the extreme step on Saturday (Aug 24). We arrested the accused the same day the girl hanged herself,” said Satara SP Sameer Shaikh.
Family members of the accused youth, however, told police that he and the girl had eloped to get married in last Oct, but her family was against their union and lodged a complaint of abduction and rape. Police said they were investigating this angle, too.
