Turkish Super Lig Table Explained: A Beginner’s Guide After Matchday 1

Welcome to the Turkish Super Lig! Think of this like a scoreboard for a whole season of football (soccer). Just like in a video game leaderboard, teams earn points by playing matches, and the team with the most points at the end wins the championship.

What Is This Table Showing?

This is the league table after the very first weekend of games (Matchday 1). It tells us:

  • Which teams have played
  • How many games they won, drew, or lost
  • How many goals they scored and conceded
  • Their total points so far

Important: The season is very young! Only a few teams have played one game. Most haven’t kicked off yet. Things will change a lot over the next 9 months.

How to Read a League Table (ELI5 Version)

Imagine a school report card for each team. Here are the columns explained simply:

Column What It Means
Rank Position in the class (1st = top of the table)
Played (P) How many matches the team has played
Won (W) Games they won (3 points each)
Drawn (D) Games that ended in a tie (1 point each)
Lost (L) Games they lost (0 points)
Goals For (GF) Goals the team scored
Goals Against (GA) Goals the team let in
Goal Difference (GD) GF minus GA (like a tiebreaker)
Points (Pts) Total points (Win=3, Draw=1, Loss=0)

The Current Standings (After Matchday 1)

Top of the Table

  1. Rizespor LEADER
    • Played: 1 | Won: 1 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 0
    • Goals: 1–0 | Goal Diff: +1 | Points: 3
    • They won their opening game 1-0. Perfect start!

The Chasing Pack (All on 1 Point)

These four teams drew their first matches (tied), so they each get 1 point:

  1. Galatasaray – Drew 2–2
  2. Çorum – Drew 2–2
  3. Kasımpaşa – Drew 1–1
  4. Trabzonspor – Drew 1–1

Fun Fact: Galatasaray are the reigning champions (they won last season). They started with a draw, but don’t worry — it’s a long season!

Teams Yet to Play (All on 0 Points)

These 12 teams haven’t played their first match yet. Their row is all zeros:

  • Alanyaspor (6th)
  • Amed (7th)
  • Beşiktaş (8th) — Big club, huge fans!
  • Erzurumspor (9th)
  • Eyüpspor (10th) — Newly promoted!
  • Fenerbahçe (11th) — One of Turkey’s biggest clubs
  • Gaziantep (12th)
  • Gençlerbirliği (13th)
  • Göztepe (14th)
  • İstanbul Başakşehir (15th)
  • Kocaelispor (16th)
  • Samsunspor (17th)

Bottom of the Table

  1. Konyaspor
    • Played: 1 | Won: 0 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 1
    • Goals: 0–1 | Goal Diff: -1 | Points: 0
    • They lost their opener 1-0. Early days though!

Why Are Some Teams Ranked Higher With Same Points?

Great question! When teams are tied on points, the table uses tiebreakers in this order:

  1. Goal Difference (GD) — Goals scored minus goals conceded
  2. Goals For (GF) — Total goals scored
  3. Head-to-Head — Result when they played each other
  4. Fair Play — Fewest red/yellow cards (rarely needed)

Example: Galatasaray, Çorum, Kasımpaşa, and Trabzonspor all have 1 point.
But Galatasaray and Çorum have GD 0 (scored 2, conceded 2), while Kasımpaşa and Trabzonspor also have GD 0 (scored 1, conceded 1).
Since GD is equal, Goals For decides: Galatasaray & Çorum (2 goals) rank above Kasımpaşa & Trabzonspor (1 goal).

What Happens Next?

The season has 38 matchdays (each team plays every other team twice — home and away). Here’s the roadmap:

  1. Matchday 2 — This weekend! All 18 teams will have played at least once.
  2. Mid-season — Around January, the table starts showing real patterns.
  3. The Run-in — Final 10 games (April–May) decide:
    • Champion (1st place)
    • European spots (2nd–4th usually)
    • Relegation (Bottom 3 drop to lower division)

Key Things to Watch This Season

  • Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe vs Beşiktaş — The "Big Three" rivalry is intense!
  • Newly promoted teams — Eyüpspor, Göztepe, Kocaelispor, Amed, Çorum — can they survive?
  • Rizespor’s dream start — Can they stay near the top?
  • Goal fest? — Galatasaray 2-2 Çorum was the highest-scoring draw so far.

Summary

  • Rizespor lead with 3 points after a 1-0 win.
  • Four teams have 1 point from draws.
  • Twelve teams haven’t played yet — all on 0 points.
  • Konyaspor are last with 0 points after a 1-0 loss.
  • It’s Matchday 1 of 38 — everything can change!

Remember: In football, form is temporary, class is permanent. The big clubs (Gala, Fener, Beşiktaş) often start slow and finish strong.

FAQ

Why do some teams have played 1 game and others 0?

The league schedules matches across Friday–Monday. Some games happen earlier in the weekend. By Monday night, everyone will have played 1 game.

What does "Goal Difference" mean and why does it matter?

It’s Goals Scored minus Goals Conceded. If two teams finish on equal points, the one with better GD ranks higher. It rewards attacking play and solid defense.

How many teams get relegated?

Usually bottom 3 (16th, 17th, 18th) drop to the 1. Lig (second division). But sometimes it’s bottom 4 — check the official rules each season.

Can a team with 0 points after 1 game still win the league?

Absolutely! In 2020–21, Beşiktaş lost their first game but still won the title. One game means almost nothing in a 38-game marathon.

Where can I watch the games?

In Turkey: beIN Sports, Tivibu, or club TV channels. Internationally: check local sports broadcasters or streaming services like beIN Connect.

Enjoy the season! The beauty of football is that anything can happen — and usually does.
