Dominate Your 12-Team Draft: Mike Clay’s Perfect Pick Every Round

Mike Clay’s 2026 Fantasy Football Draft Recipe: A Round-by-Round Guide for Beginners

By Mike Clay, ESPN Senior Fantasy Writer
Published August 22, 2026 | 12-Team PPR League Strategy

What Is This Guide?

Imagine you’re building a fantasy football team. You have 16 rounds to pick players. Mike Clay (a fantasy football Hall of Famer whose projections power ESPN’s game) is sharing his personal cheat sheet—the exact players he circles and when he plans to grab them.

IMPORTANT: This isn’t a strict "must follow" list. It’s a framework to help you understand how to think during your draft. Your league might value players differently!

The Golden Rule: Don’t Draft at the "Ceiling"

ELI5: Ceiling = Best possible outcome. Floor = Worst possible outcome.

When Mike picks a player, he asks: "Am I paying for this player’s absolute best season?"

  • Yes? → Look for someone with more upside (room to grow).
  • No? → Great value!

Round 1 exception: Everyone’s near their ceiling. Just take the best player available.

Rounds 1–3: Building Your Core (The "Must-Have" Stars)

Round 1: Best Running Back (RB) or Wide Receiver (WR) Available

If You Pick… Target These Players
Top 2 Jahmyr Gibbs or Bijan Robinson (elite young RBs)
Middle Christian McCaffrey or Jonathan Taylor (proven stars)
Anywhere Ja’Marr Chase, Puka Nacua, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Amon-Ra St. Brown, CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson (top WRs)

Mike’s Advice: "Don’t overthink Round 1. It’s loaded. Take the best guy on your board."

Round 2: De’Von Achane (RB, Dolphins) — Mike’s Favorite Here

Why Achane?

  • 24 years old
  • Top-5 fantasy RB last two years
  • 11–12 TDs every season
  • #1 in yards per carry (5.62) since entering NFL

Concerns: New coach, Miami offense rebuilding.
Mike’s Take: Coach says huge workload coming. That’s enough for Mike—he compares Achane to prime Alvin Kamara.

Backup Options if Achane Gone:

  • RBs: Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, Kenneth Walker III
  • WRs: Drake London, Nico Collins, A.J. Brown, George Pickens
  • TEs (if you must): Trey McBride, Brock Bowers (but Mike prefers waiting)

Round 3: Jeremiyah Love (RB, Chargers) — "My Guy" of 2026

Why Mike Loves Him:

  • Ranked way higher than consensus (often grabs late Round 2)
  • #3 overall pick in NFL Draft
  • 9 of last 10 RBs drafted top-12 finished top-12 as rookies
  • Excellent rusher, receiver, and blocker
  • Ankle injury in preseason → may miss Week 1, but likely ready

If Love Gone:

  • Malik Nabers (WR, Giants) — returning from ACL tear, Week 1 look good
  • Rashee Rice (WR, Chiefs) — discipline risk already priced in; 9.8 targets/game when healthy
  • RB Tier (RB6–RB15): Breece Hall, Josh Jacobs (watch suspension)

Rounds 4–6: High-Upside Value Picks

Round 4: Garrett Wilson (WR, Jets) — Mike’s Favorite Round/Pick

The Discount: Missed 10 games in 2025 (injuries).
The Upside: When healthy → 14.2 fantasy PPG, 33% target share.
New QB: Geno Smith → led DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, JSN to top-16 finishes (2022–24).

Alternatives:

  • RBs (Mike’s faves): Cam Skattebo, Quinshon Judkins (RB pool dries up after Round 4!)
  • WRs: Tetairoa McMillan, Emeka Egbuka (Year 2 breakout candidates)
  • TE: Colston Loveland (Year 2 tight end)

Round 5: Tyler Warren (TE, Colts) — Best TE Value

Rookie Year Flash:

  • 12 games with healthy Daniel Jones → 5 TDs, 13.1 PPG
  • 5 games without Jones → 0 TDs, 6.3 PPG
  • Top-5 TE in targets & end-zone targets
  • 3 goal-line carries

WR Alternatives: Terry McLaurin, Jameson Williams, Davante Adams

Round 6: Rome Odunze (WR, Bears) — Year 3 Leap Candidate

Why Not Luther Burden III (teammate getting hype)?

  • Odunze could lead Chicago in targets & fantasy points
  • 5 TDs, 15+ PPG in first 4 games last year (before injury)
  • Near full health → possible WR1 return

Other Targets:

  • Carnell Tate (WR, OSU) — needs Cam Ward (QB) to progress
  • Parker Washington (WR) — ADP risen to Round 6 (getting pricey)
  • Jayden Daniels (QB) — first QB consideration if you waited

Rounds 7–10: Filling Gaps & Adding Depth

Round 7: Courtland Sutton (WR, Broncos) — Reliable Veteran

  • 2 straight 1,000+ yard / top-20 seasons
  • #3 in league in end-zone targets (last 4 years)
  • New competition (Jaylen Waddle), but still Bo Nix’s go-to near goal line

Backups: Rico Dowdle (RB3/Flex), Sam LaPorta / Kyle Pitts (TE)

Round 8: Michael Pittman Jr. (WR, Steelers) — Boring but Profitable

  • 4 of 6 years as top-20 WR in Indy
  • 5 straight 800+ yard seasons
  • Likely Aaron Rodgers’ top target in Pittsburgh

Lottery Ticket: Alec Pierce (Colts WR) — big contract, ankle/heel surgery, if Week 1 ready = steal
RB Option: Jonathon Brooks (Panthers) — could lead backfield

Round 9: Jaxson Dart (QB, Giants) — Mike’s Most-Drafted QB

Why a Rookie QB Here?

  • Inexpensive (late Round 9)
  • Huge ceiling — Top-10 fantasy QB in 8 of 12 games last year (only 4 QBs did better!)
  • Elite rushing ability
  • Better cast in 2026: John Harbaugh (coach), Malik Nabers (WR) healthy

Alternatives: Kenny Gainwell / Jordan Mason (RBs), George Kittle (TE — Achilles recovery, discount)

Round 10: Bo Nix OR Brock Purdy (QB) — Second QB Insurance

Strategy: Waited on QB → grab two high-upside QBs (deep QB tier in 2026).

QB Why
Bo Nix Finished #7 fantasy QB both years! Falls to Round 10. Waddle added.
Brock Purdy Missed time 2025, but 17+ PPG in 7 of 9 games. Eyeing 4th straight top-10 PPG finish.

Non-QB Options: Jacory Croskey-Merritt (RB), Jake Ferguson (TE)

Rounds 11–14: Late-Round Fliers & Breakout Lottery Tickets

ELI5: Flier = Low-cost, high-reward pick. Like buying a $1 lottery ticket that could win $1M.

Round 11: Matthew Golden (WR, Packers) — Year 2 Breakout

  • 2025 1st-round pick, limited rookie role
  • Playoff flash: 4 catches, 84 yards, 1 TD vs Bears
  • Romeo Doubs & Dontayvion Wicks GONE → target share opens up
  • Coach Matt LaFleur wants fewer targets spread around → good for Golden, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed

Other Fliers:

  • KC Concepcion (rookie WR)
  • Xavier Worthy (post-hype WR)
  • Zach Charbonnet (RB — ACL return, could lead Seattle run game)
  • Dallas Goedert (TE)

Round 12: De’Zhaun Stribling (WR, 49ers) — Reaching for a League Winner

  • ADP Round 13, but Mike reaches in Round 12
  • #33 overall pick, 6’2", 4.36 40-yard dash
  • Impressive preseason
  • Ricky Pearsall out for year → competes with aging Mike Evans (33), Deebo Samuel (30), injured Kittle
  • 49ers offense: Top-6 passing yards 3 straight years
  • Fun fact: Uncle is WWE Hall of Famer Don "The Magnificent" Muraco

Alternatives: Rashid Shaheed (WR), RBs: Woody Marks, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Tyler Allgeier, Tyjae Spears

Rounds 13–14: High-Ceiling Insurance & Breakout Candidates

Quarterback Fliers (Deeper Leagues)

  • Daniel Jones, Malik Willis, Cam Ward

Running Back "Handcuffs" (Injury Insurance)

ELI5: Handcuff = Backup RB who becomes starter if starter gets hurt.

  • Brian Robinson Jr., Keaton Mitchell, Isiah Pacheco, Jonah Coleman, Tank Bigsby, Ray Davis, Dylan Sampson, Mike Washington Jr., Braelon Allen, MarShawn Lloyd

Wide Receiver Upside Fliers (Day 1/2 Draft Picks)

Simple Rule: Target 1st/2nd-year WRs drafted Rounds 1–2 of NFL Draft.

  • Rookies: Stribling, Denzel Boston, Caleb Douglas, Ja’Kobi Lane, Germie Bernard, Zachariah Branch, Omar Cooper Jr.
  • Year 2: Travis Hunter, Jalen McMillan, Tre’ Harris, Adonai Mitchell

Tight End Fliers

  • Veterans: T.J. Hockenson, Hunter Henry, Juwan Johnson
  • Breakout Youth: Terrance Ferguson (Rams — steal, could be 3rd in targets), Kenyon Sadiq (1st-round TE → 6 straight finished top-12 as rookies), Gunnar Helm

Rounds 15–16: Kicker, Defense… or MORE Breakouts?

The Secret Strategy: Don’t Draft K/DST Early!

Mike’s Hot Take: "Most leaguemates draft K/DST and let them rot. Don’t do that!"

Instead: Stash high-upside RBs/WRs on bench.

  • If Saquon Barkley gets hurt → you have Tank Bigsby (potential RB2), not the Ravens defense.
  • Right before Week 1: Drop 2 bench guys → pick up hot DST matchup + decent kicker.

ESPN Hack: Cut K/DST immediately after draft → add more upside stashes.

If You MUST Draft Defense (D/ST)

Never reach! History proves it:

  • #1 DST → finished 9th or worse next year in 7 of last 9 seasons
  • 4 DSTs ranked 27th+ in 2024top-10 in 2025

Mike’s Top Targets: Texans, Broncos, Steelers, Seahawks, Rams
Streaming Targets (Week 1 easy matchup): Jaguars, Jets, Chargers

If You MUST Draft Kicker

Pick best available — DO NOT REACH.

  • Top ranks: Brandon Aubrey, Cameron Dicker, Jason Myers
  • Daniel Carlson (top K 2021–22) → #24 in 2023 after reachers drafted him early
  • #1 Kicker8th or worse next year in 6 of last 8 seasons
  • Jason Myers (11-year vet) → never top-4 before #1 in 2025

Summary: Mike’s Draft Blueprint

Phase Rounds Goal Key Principles
Core 1–3 Elite RB/WR foundation Don’t overthink R1; Target Achane (R2); Reach for Love (R3)
Value/Upside 4–6 High-ceiling discounts Wilson (injury discount), Warren (TE value), Odunze (Year 3 leap)
Depth/Floor 7–10 Reliable starters + QB Sutton/Pittman (steady WRs); Dart/Nix/Purdy (QB pair)
Lottery 11–14 Bench upside & insurance Golden/Stribling (WR breakouts); RB handcuffs; Young WRs/TEs
Endgame 15–16 Skip K/DST! Stash upside → swap for K/DST week of Week 1

Final Reminder: This is Mike’s personal recipe. Use it as a guide, not gospel. Adjust for your league’s ADP, scoring, and your own gut!

FAQ: Your Draft Questions Answered

1. What does "ADP" mean and why does Mike use it?

ADP = Average Draft Position (where a player is typically picked across thousands of drafts). Mike uses Draft Sharks’ Market Index so his guide works for most 12-team leagues. If your league drafts differently, adjust!

2. Why does Mike wait so long on Quarterback?

Because QB is deep in 2026! You can get top-10 upside (Dart, Nix, Purdy) in Rounds 9–10. Spending early picks on QB means missing elite RBs/WRs who score more relative to their position.

3. What’s a "handcuff" and do I need them?

A handcuff is a backup RB who’d start if the starter gets injured (e.g., Tank Bigsby behind Saquon Barkley). Yes! In Rounds 13–14, they’re free lottery tickets. If your starter gets hurt, you instantly have an RB2.

4. Should I really not draft a Kicker or Defense until the very end?

Correct. History shows zero correlation between early K/DST picks and season-long success. The #1 K/DST one year is often average the next. Stream them weekly (pick up best matchup) instead.

5. How do I use this guide during my actual draft?

  1. Print or screenshot the round-by-round targets.
  2. Cross off players as they’re drafted.
  3. When your turn comes: Pick the highest-ranked available player from Mike’s list for that round that fits your roster need.
  4. Stay flexible! If a top player falls to you — take him, even if "off script."

Good luck in your 2026 draft!
Remember: The best draft strategy is the one that lets you sleep at night knowing you got YOUR guys.
