Serie A Football League Table: A Beginner’s Guide to the Current Standings

What Is This Table All About?

Imagine a big scoreboard that shows how all 20 teams in Italy’s top football league (called Serie A) are doing. This table is like a report card for each team — it tells you who’s winning, who’s drawing, and who needs to improve.

Important Point: This table shows the standings after the first few matches of the season. Some teams have played 1 game, others haven’t played yet! The table will change every week as more matches are played.

How to Read the Table (ELI5 Style)

Think of each column like a different subject on a report card:

Column What It Means Simple Explanation
Rank Position 1st place = best, 20th place = needs work
Team Club Name The football club (like Inter Milan, Juventus, etc.)
Played (P) Games Played How many matches they’ve done so far
Won (W) Victories Games they won (3 points each!)
Drawn (D) Ties Games that ended equal (1 point each)
Lost (L) Defeats Games they lost (0 points)
Goals For (GF) Goals Scored How many goals they kicked into the net
Goals Against (GA) Goals Conceded How many goals the other team scored on them
Goal Diff (GD) Goal Difference GF minus GA (higher = better attack/defense)
Points (Pts) Total Points Wins × 3 + Draws × 1 = This decides the ranking!
Form Last 6 Games Recent results: W = Win, D = Draw, L = Loss

The Current Top of the Table

1st Place: Inter Milan

  • Played: 1 | Won: 1 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 0
  • Goals: Scored 4, Conceded 1 | Difference: +3
  • Points: 3 | Form: W (Just won their first game!)
  • Why they’re top: Big win with lots of goals!

2nd Place: Napoli

  • Played: 1 | Won: 1 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 0
  • Goals: Scored 2, Conceded 0 | Difference: +2
  • Points: 3 | Form: W
  • Why they’re second: Won without letting in any goals — clean sheet!

3rd Place: Cagliari

  • Played: 1 | Won: 1 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 0
  • Goals: Scored 1, Conceded 0 | Difference: +1
  • Points: 3 | Form: W
  • Why they’re third: Also won 1-0, but smaller goal difference than Napoli.

Key Insight: All three top teams have 3 points (1 win each). They’re separated only by Goal Difference — like a tiebreaker!

The Middle of the Pack

4th & 5th: Como & Udinese (Both drew their first game)

  • Played: 1 | Won: 0 | Drawn: 1 | Lost: 0
  • Goals: 1-1 | Difference: 0 | Points: 1
  • Form: D (Draw)
  • What this means: They didn’t lose, but didn’t win either. 1 point each.

Teams Yet to Play Their First Match

Big names with 0 points, 0 games played:

  • AC Milan (6th) — Last year’s runners-up!
  • Atalanta (7th) — Exciting attacking team
  • Juventus (11th) — Most successful Italian club ever
  • Roma (14th) — Big Rome club
  • Lazio (12th) — Roma’s city rivals
  • Bologna, Fiorentina, Torino, Lecce, Sassuolo, Venezia, Frosinone, Monza, Genoa, Parma

Important: These teams aren’t "bad" — they just haven’t played yet! Their first matches are coming soon.

The Bottom Three

18th: Parma

  • Played: 1 | Lost: 1 | Goals: 0-1 | Points: 0 | Form: L

19th: Genoa

  • Played: 1 | Lost: 1 | Goals: 0-2 | Points: 0 | Form: L

20th: Monza

  • Played: 1 | Lost: 1 | Goals: 1-4 | Points: 0 | Form: L
  • Note: Monza scored a goal but conceded 4 — tough start!

How the Points System Works (Numbered Steps)

  1. Win a match → Get 3 points
  2. Draw (tie) → Get 1 point each
  3. Lose → Get 0 points
  4. Add them up → Total Points = (Wins × 3) + (Draws × 1)
  5. Most points = Higher rank → Simple!

Why Goal Difference Matters (The Tiebreaker)

When teams have the same points, we look at Goal Difference (GD):

  • GD = Goals Scored − Goals Conceded
  • Higher GD = Better (means you score lots AND defend well)
  • Example: Inter (+3) beats Napoli (+2) beats Cagliari (+1)

Summary

  • Early days! Only a few games played so far.
  • Top 3 all have 3 points (1 win each), separated by goal difference.
  • Two teams (Como, Udinese) have 1 point from a draw.
  • Many big clubs (Milan, Juve, Roma, etc.) haven’t played yet — they’re at 0 points but will move up soon.
  • Bottom 3 have lost their opening games.
  • This table changes every weekend — check back after the next matches!

FAQ

Q: Why do some teams have 0 points but are ranked above teams with 1 point?

A: They don’t! Look closely — teams with 1 point (Como, Udinese) are 4th and 5th. Teams with 0 points start from 6th. The table is sorted by Points first, then Goal Difference.

Q: What does "Form" mean with all those dashes and one letter?

A: The form guide shows the last 6 games (oldest first). Dashes mean "no game yet" (season just started). The last letter is the most recent result: W = Win, D = Draw, L = Loss.

Q: Why haven’t AC Milan, Juventus, and Roma played yet?

A: The schedule is spread out! Some teams play Saturday, some Sunday, some Monday. Others might have had their match postponed for TV or cup competitions. They’ll play very soon.

Q: Can a team at the bottom still win the league?

A: Absolutely! It’s only Game 1 (or 0) of 38. Monza lost 4-1 but has 37 games left. In 2021-22, AC Milan started slowly and still won the title!

Q: What happens to the bottom teams at the end of the season?

A: The bottom 3 teams (18th, 19th, 20th) get relegated — they drop down to Serie B (the second division) next year. The top teams from Serie B come up. It’s like promotion/relegation in a video game league!
