Former Congress president’s comments on unemployment and India’s economic focus were made during his visit to the US on September 8.In response, several BJP leaders have accused Gandhi of tarnishing India’s image abroad.
Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed Gandhi’s statements, alleging that the Congress leader routinely promotes China: “Rahul Gandhi always promotes China. He always humiliates India and projects China as an ideal nation. There is no democracy in China, there is no religious freedom. Does Rahul Gandhi tell this to people? The MoU signed between the Congress and the Communist Party of China should be exposed.”
During his visit to Dallas, Gandhi discussed the issue of unemployment and critiqued India’s focus on consumption rather than production. “The act of production creates jobs. What we do, what the Americans do, what the West does, is we organize consumption,” he said, emphasising the job-creation potential of production.
Gandhi also pointed out the changing global production landscape, highlighting China’s dominance compared to past decades, and observed that Western countries, including India, have shifted their focus away from production.
He spoke on ideological differences with the RSS, saying, “The RSS believes that India is one idea and we believe that India is a multiplicity of ideas.”
Leader of opposition added that his party, Congress, supports inclusion and diversity, and he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attacking the Indian Constitution.
MP Manoj Tiwari and Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also accused Gandhi of undermining India’s image abroad. Chouhan specifically accused him of betraying the country by ‘tarnishing’ its image internationally.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia called Gandhi a “black spot on democracy” over his remarks on unemployment.
Bihar deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha also criticised LoP for his comments about the RSS and unemployment made during the US visit, saying that Gandhi’s intention is to insult the country and tarnish its image internationally
