NEW DELHI: A Jammu and Kashmir Police Head Constable, Bashir Ahmed, was killed on Sunday during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Kathua district. The incident occurred in village Kog, under the jurisdiction of Billawar Police Station, where security forces were conducting a search operation.
Bashir Ahmed managed to gun down one terrorist before succumbing to his injuries in the exchange of fire. The police confirmed the martyrdom of the officer, describing his actions as a “supreme sacrifice.” Two other officers, deputy superintendent of police Sukhbir and Assistant Sub-Inspector Niaz Ahmed, also sustained injuries in the encounter. Both were airlifted for treatment and are reported to be stable.
The encounter began after security forces received intelligence about the presence of three to four terrorists in the remote village. Following the information, a joint operation was launched by the police and security forces. While one terrorist was neutralized, the search for additional suspects is ongoing.
“We were informed about the presence of terrorists in the area, leading to the operation,” said additional director general of police (ADGP) Anand Jain. “Unfortunately, Head Constable Bashir Ahmed was martyred, and two others were injured. We are continuing the search and believe the remaining terrorists are foreign operatives.”
The incident occurred just a day after similar attacks in the same region, raising concerns about security during the upcoming third phase of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. ADGP Jain assured that arrangements have been made to prevent any disruptions during the elections, stating, “We are ensuring that no terror attacks or violence take place during the polling.”
The operation in Kathua remains ongoing as security forces comb the area for any remaining threats.
