NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Maharashtra elections, the National Commission for Backward Classes has recommended to the govt the inclusion of seven communities and their synonyms in the central list of OBCs from the state. Once included in the list, they will be eligible for central schemes and reservation in appointments in the OBC category. This aims to address the long-pending demand of many castes and communities.
Those recommended for inclusion in the central list are Lodha and its synonyms like Lodh and Lodhi; Badgujar; Suryavanshi Gujar; Leve Gujar, Reve Gujar and Reva Gujar; Dangari; Bhoyar, Pawar; Kapewar, Munnar Kapewar, Munnar Kapu, Telanga, Telangi, Pentarreddy and Bukekari. These castes/communities are already in the state list of OBCs in Maharashtra.
The two-member bench of the NCBC, comprising chairperson Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, and member Bhuvan Bhushan Kamal, held hearings regarding the inclusion on Oct 17 last year and then on July 26 this year.
According to officials, the recommendations from the NCBC will be scrutinised by the social justice ministry, and once approved by the govt, they will be included in the list by way of a bill that will be placed in Parliament for approval. The next session of Parliament, the winter session, is usually held in the month of Dec.
