Man hospitalised after consuming vitality-boosting Kamini tablets: Dangerous side effects one must know

A serious side effect of Multani Kaminividravana Rasa (popularly known as ‘Kamini’, or Kamini Vidrawan Ras) has come to the fore. Consuming Kamini tablets, which is often consumed to boost vigor and vitality, has landed up a man in hospital with severe side effects.
The man from South Australia had a severe case of lead poisoning which has been linked to Kamini tablets. As per reports, alarming levels of lead and mercury were found in the tablets.
“Kamini tablets pose a serious risk to your health and should not be taken. This ayurvedic medicine is sold as an aphrodisiac and labelled as a ‘powerful stimulant useful in weakness and lack of vigour & vitality’,” Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration Department has said in a report.
Lead and mercury can cause severe body exposure that affects different organs and systems. Both are toxic heavy metals, and low levels can be harmful if exposed for a long time.
Lead poisoning causes damage to the brain, nervous system, kidneys, and blood production. Lead poisoning in children delays their development, which lowers their IQ, increases learning difficulties, and increases behavioral problems. In adults, lead exposure leads to high blood pressure, pain in the joints and muscles, memory problems, and mood changes. Lead settles in the bones, but over time, it starts to leach into the bloodstream, and this becomes a danger to pregnant women who pass it on to both themselves and their babies.
Common symptoms of lead poisoning include abdominal pain, fatigue, irritability, memory issues, and muscle pain. Children are particularly vulnerable and may show developmental delays, learning difficulties, and behavioral issues, such as hyperactivity or aggression. Chronic exposure can lead to high blood pressure, anemia, and kidney dysfunction. Lead exposure may also manifest as joint pain and numbness or tingling in extremities.
Mercury is neurotoxic. This poison attacks the brain and damages the nerves causing mental impairment, memory, and shakiness. Mood swings also happen due to exposure to mercury. When exposed to mercury, the babies before birth often disrupt the normal procedure of developing the brain in their developing stages, thereby causing permanent disabilities related to cognitive and motor inadequacies. The kidneys and the immune system are also under attack, and the body begins to weaken, when it is exposed to mercury.
Common signs of mercury poisoning include tremors, mood swings, irritability, memory loss, and muscle weakness. Severe exposure can lead to hearing and vision impairments, along with coordination difficulties. Mercury poisoning can also affect the skin, causing a metallic taste, rashes, or peeling.
Not just this, the Australian government has released safety alerts for several other such medications. It had recently warned its citizens against a product labelled African Vigorous Max Strength after finding that it contains the undeclared substance sildenafil.
Mitigating exposure and adopting rigid safety standards are mandatory measures to prevent such harmful effects on health.
