Few hits, many misses: Coldplay's Ahmedabad shows sell out in minutes

AHMEDABAD: Coldplay fever hit India hard as the British rock band’s tickets for their two Ahmedabad shows sold out within minutes, leaving fans divided between excitement and frustration. The band added a second performance on Jan 26, following overwhelming demand, but even that wasn’t enough to meet the frenzy. Fans employed multiple devices, logged in from different accounts, and endured long waiting times, only to find themselves locked out of the concert experience.

While some fans had high hopes and succeeded in getting the tickets, others were left disappointed. Nevertheless, the ticketing process received mixed reviews, with fans taking to social media to share their experiences and vent their frustrations.
Jhanvi Grewal, an Ahmedabad-based professional, was utterly delighted to secure four tickets for herself and her friends. “The platform assigned random numbers to users who entered the virtual wait room at noon. We had three devices and four friends trying simultaneously. Some were placed in queues with over 2.80 lakh people! We managed to secure a ticket in Section B in the lower stands, which cost us Rs 4,200 each, but we truly look forward to the performance,” she said.
Some, on the other hand, despite trying hard, could not manage to get tickets. Putting this in perspective, Kavya Singh, a city-based healthcare professional, said, “My daughter is a fan of the band, and therefore, we tried hard to book the tickets using multiple devices but failed to do so. Our queue number was around 40,000, after which the tickets sold out.”
Gauri Wagenaar, also a professional from Ahmedabad, said, “Four of our friends were trying to get tickets. When booking opened, one laptop displayed a waiting queue of 40,000 and another was at 1 lakh. By the time we got to book, tickets sold out. We were disappointed but what happened was not a urprise as the craze for the band is real.” Social media was abuzz with mixed reviews as eager fans hit and missed their ticketing attempts. Some, however, criticised the poor management on online platforms. “After the experience of booking tickets for Coldplay’s Mumbai concert, Ahmedabad was better. However, ticketing platforms in India have a long way to go. I recently attended a Coldplay concert in Singapore and managed to get tickets easily without much hassle,” said Nirjari Shah, an Ahmedabad-based entrepreneur.
“Got into queue for the second Coldplay show at Ahmedabad. Selected my tickets, and then there was no option to pay or do anything at all,” stated a social media post on X by Anindit Sinha.
Ticket resale, in fact, began in no time, with social media also flooding with posts. Tickets that cost about Rs 3,500 per person according to the official website, are being resold for Rs 10,000-30,000 per person. Some others who managed four tickets each for both shows flooded social media to swap their existing tickets for eight people to be able to attend the show together.
