JAMMU: After a massive drive across several districts in Kashmir to curb potential misuse of SIM cards for anti-national activities on Saturday, J&K police on Sunday launched a similar drive in Samba and Kishtwar districts of Jammu.
“The initiative is aimed at ensuring compliance with mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines and preventing misuse of SIM cards for anti-national and other unlawful activities,” police said, adding: “There have been several instances where terrorists or Over-Ground Workers (OGWs) procured SIM cards by forging documents or through stolen identities.”
“During the drive, we scrutinized records maintained by SIM card vendors to verify whether proper customer verification processes are being followed. We also focused on identifying unauthorized issuance of SIM cards,” police said.
During inspection, police teams instructed vendors to ensure that SIM cards are issued only after thorough verification of customer identity and address, and to maintain accurate record of every new SIM card issued.
Police officers also directed second-hand mobile sellers and mobile repair technicians to maintain transaction records, including customer identities, to ensure transparency and accountability.
