A month on, Wayanad families find kin’s body parts in separate graves | India News – Times of India

WAYANAD: PP Subair lost his minor son Suhaib Rahman and his brother-in-law Abdul Nazar in the Wayanad landslide July 30. A month on, the tragedy deepened when DNA results revealed that Nazar’s remains were buried in two separate graves, as his body was torn apart by a cascading wall of water, mud and rocks.
Subair, along with other survivors facing similar circumstances, has planned to exhume the remains to consolidate the bodies of their loved ones into single graves.
Nazar’s remains were among the unidentified bodies laid to rest at a special burial ground in Puthumala. A total of 73 bodies, including 56 body parts, were matched with DNA samples from blood relatives. As of Wednesday, 36 results have been released. In multiple cases, it was discovered that body parts of the deceased were buried in separate graves.
Subair and his family couldn’t have imagined that death was shadowing their steps when they rushed down the hill from Punchirimattom to seek refuge at Nazar’s home in Mundakkai in the early hours of July 30, fleeing the looming landslide. The landslide washed away the house, killing Subair’s son, Nazar, and Nazar’s son Sinan.
“Each grave is marked with a number corresponding to the DNA sample collected from the body buried there. Based on results, they gave us the number corresponding to the spot where he was buried. That is when we found out that one of his legs was buried separately. We went to the graves and kept markers. We are also planning to place a tombstone,” added Subair.
Puthumala ward member Sukanyamol Ashin cited the example of a man who lost his father and mother in the landslide. “The other day, it was found that body parts of his father were buried in separate graves. His mother’s body is yet to be identified. He is waiting for identification so that the remains can be exhumed and moved to church cemetery. Another woman’s remains were also found to be buried in separate graves.”
