'A torn earphone and lost soul': How police arrested accused for brutal rape-murder of Kolkata doctor

KOLKATA: A Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested on Saturday for the brutal rape-murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, barely six hours after the police force set up a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. The SIT had picked up the 33-year-old accused for questioning a little before midnight on Friday.
Roy, recruited in 2019, had on multiple occasions been posted at RG Kar Hospital’s police outpost, sometimes for long stretches, and therefore had easy access to every department of the hospital. What gave him away was a torn earphone found in the seminar room on the third floor of the emergency building where the young doctor’s body was found on Friday. CCTV footage also showed Roy entering the emergency building at 4 am with a bluetooth device round his neck. When he exited the building 40 minutes later, the earphone was missing. The device later paired with his cellphone.
The official postmortem report late on Friday also confirmed sexual assault on the 31-year-old doctor. The report said there were multiple signs of injuries and struggle on the body. There were blood stains on the face, eyes and face, scratch marks on various parts of the body and bleeding from the private parts. There were injuries on the lips, abdomen, right hand and fingers while a collar bone was broken.
“We collected evidence all through the night and arrested the accused due to his strong complicity in the case based on items collected from the spot and CCTV footage,” police commissioner Vineet Goyal said.

Roy was produced in a Sealdah court, where no lawyer agreed to represent him. The court sent him to 14 days’ police custody after the public prosecutor compared the R G Kar incident with the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
Waves of protests engulfed RG Kar all through Saturday and spread to hospitals across Bengal. Junior doctors, house staff and interns on other campuses, including at nodal city hospitals like NRS, Medical College and CNMC, stayed away from work demanding better security and exemplary punishment for the accused.
‘Accused failed to explain his presence at hospital’
Investigation revealed the doctor was asleep when civic volunteer Sanjay Roy attacked her in the seminar room. She and her two juniors had ordered food post-midnight and at least five doctors had dinner together in the seminar room while watching Neeraj Chopra win silver in the Olympics. Post-dinner, the others left while she decided to study and rest for a while. According to sources, she was spotted sleeping in the seminar room at least till 3 am.
Roy, sources said, first entered the RG Kar premises around 11 pm. He was already intoxicated. He left the hospital complex soon and reportedly drank some more. Around 4 am, he was seen entering the emergency building and exiting 40 minutes later. CCTV footage showed five others had accessed the area around the seminar hall on the third floor, but only Roy could not explain his presence. He later confessed to the crime and admitted throttling the doctor after she put up a struggle. Security guards at the hospital said Roy regularly visited the hospital while some alleged he acted as a tout, cutting deals with patients to get them services.
As protest engulfed the campus, members of several leftist student and youth organisations, students and junior doctors from other campuses reached RG Kar and scuffled with cops. As police tried to barricade ‘outsiders,’ protesting doctors and students inside said they did not want any political colour to the movement and anyone wishing to join their protest was welcome to do so as a common citizen.
