Aam Aadmi Party cries councillor ‘kidnapped’; BJP rubbishes claim | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of kidnapping its councillor, Ram Chander. The accusation came just days before crucial zonal ward committee elections in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), scheduled for September 4. The BJP has strongly denied the charges, even as the “abducted” councillor later returned home, making fresh claims of threats from BJP leaders.
Ram Chander, who represents Ward No. 28, recently made headlines when he defected from AAP to join the BJP. However, in a dramatic turn of events, he rejoined AAP after, as he claimed, seeing Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in a dream. Chander’s return to AAP was quickly followed by a video statement in which he accused the BJP of intimidation tactics.
In his video message, Chander alleged that he was taken to the BJP headquarters where he was threatened with being framed in cases by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). “I want to tell BJP, I am not scared of ED and CBI. I have done nothing wrong. I am a soldier of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal,” Chander declared, emphasising his loyalty to AAP.
The situation escalated when AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh shared a video of Chander’s son, Akash, on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), claiming that his father had been kidnapped. In the video, Akash described how his father was approached by an ex-BJP councillor and then allegedly taken away by a group of men who threatened to implicate him in legal cases.
In response, senior AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak, echoed the kidnapping allegations and warned of serious repercussions if Chander was not returned safely. Pathak accused the BJP of “making a mockery of law and order” in Delhi, threatening to create a massive uproar if Chander was not brought home within a short time frame.
The BJP, however, dismissed the allegations as baseless and sensational. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor accused AAP leaders of spreading false rumors. Kapoor asserted that Ram Chander was at his residence and that the BJP was unconcerned about his party affiliation.
The incident comes amid an intensifying battle between AAP and BJP in the lead-up to the MCD zonal ward committee elections, with both parties claiming defections from each other’s ranks. The political drama surrounding Ram Chander’s alleged abduction has only added fuel to the already charged atmosphere as both sides prepare for the crucial electoral showdown.
