‘Aapne googly daal diya’: Suryakumar Yadav opens up on taking Mumbai Indians captaincy

Suryakumar Yadav , the newly appointed India’s T20 captain, is relishing his time in the leadership role and has dropped hints about his aspirations to lead an IPL franchise in the near future. The Mumbai Indians player’s stock has risen significantly since the T20 World Cup win, and his current stint as India captain has only added to his growing reputation.

Suryakumar Yadav on taking up captaincy in IPL

When asked about his IPL captaincy ambitions, Suryakumar Yadav responded with a witty remark, “Aapne googly daal diya (You put me in a tough spot).” Suryakumar’s response suggests that he is open to the idea of leading an IPL franchise, but the decision ultimately rests with the team management.

Mumbai Indians , who have won the IPL five times, would ideally like to retain Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, but his current status as India captain adds a new dimension to the equation. The franchise had previously removed Rohit Sharma as captain and appointed Hardik Pandya , a move that did not yield the desired results.

“Really enjoying this new role (as India captain). When I was playing under Rohit bhai’s captaincy in MI, I used to give my inputs whatever I felt at that time,” Suryakumar Yadav said in the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

For now, Suryakumar is focused on his role as India captain and is looking forward to the T20 series against Bangladesh . His response to the IPL leadership question was lighthearted, but it has sparked curiosity about his future in the IPL.

“For India also feeling good. I captained against Sri Lanka previously against Australia and South Africa also. I have learnt from other captains on how to take the team forward. Aage dekhte hain. Chalte rahta hain. Baaki aapko pata toh chal hee jayega (Let’s see how it goes. Rest you will know in due course of time),” he added.

India and Bangladesh will now play a three-match T20I series, the first match of which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 6.
