Ahead of Ukraine visit, PM Modi reiterates ‘not time for war’ message from Poland | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the Indian community in Warsaw, Poland, reaffirmed India’s commitment to lasting peace in the region ahead of his visit to Ukraine.
The Prime Minister reiterated his stance that “this is not an era of war” and called for unity in tackling humanity’s greatest challenges.
“India is the land of Lord Buddha’s legacy. Therefore, India does not believe in war and advocates for peace in this region. India is an advocate of permanent peace in this region. India’s concept is clear: this is not an era of war, and it is the time to unite to tackle the biggest challenges of humanity. Thus, India believes in dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflict,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Kyiv, at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marks the first trip by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991. PM Modi expressed his intention to share perspectives on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict with the Ukrainian leader. This visit comes nearly six weeks after his high-profile trip to Moscow, which drew criticism from the US and some Western allies.
PM Modi highlighted India’s shift from maintaining distance from all countries to fostering equal closeness with all nations. He stated that today’s India seeks to connect with everyone, focusing on development and considering the interests of all.
“For decades, India had a policy to maintain distance from all the countries. However, the policy of today’s India is to have equal closeness with all countries. The India of today wants to connect with all. Today’s India talks about the development of all. Today’s India is with all and thinks about the interests of all,” he said.
The Prime Minister praised the Indian community for their efforts, actions, and empathy, which have brought laurels to the country. He cited examples of India’s humanitarian assistance during crises, such as sending medicines and vaccines to over 150 nations during the COVID-19 pandemic and helping Indian students stuck in Ukraine when the war erupted in 2022.
PM Modi also commended India’s democratic system, noting the high voter turnout and the efficient management of the recent elections. He expressed pride in the world’s respect for India as ‘Vishwabandhu’ and acknowledged the Indian community’s role in upholding this image.
During his address, the Prime Minister recalled the historical ties between India and Poland, particularly the story of Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja, who provided shelter to Polish women and children during World War II and is still remembered as the ‘Good Maharaja’ in Poland. To further strengthen these ties, PM Modi announced the launch of the Jam Saheb Memorial Youth Exchange programme, which will invite 20 Polish youths annually to visit India.
