NEW DELHI: Legendary Sachin Tendulkar labelled Ravichandran Ashwin as one of India’s finest match-winners after the spinner announced a sudden retirement from international cricket on Wednesday.
As the third India vs Australia Test in Brisbane ended in a draw, Ashwin stunned the cricketing world with his retirement after the match, informing everyone about his ‘last day as an Indian cricketer’.
Soon after the 38-year-old hanged up his boots, wishes poured in from all quarters with Sachin, congratulating the spin great on a stellar career.
Ashwin retires from international cricket as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 wickets in 106 matches, only behind Anil Kumble, who has 619 wickets.
Ashwin however plans to continue playing club cricket.
“I won’t take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer,” Ashwin said at the end of the drawn third Test.
In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin played the day-night Test in Adelaide and picked up one wicket.
“He was very, very sure of his decision. We should stand by what he wants,” said Rohit.
Ashwin was also seen sharing an emotional moment with star batter Virat Kohli in the dressing room hours before the announcement.
