NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday of seeking to remove numerous voters from Delhi’s electoral rolls before the upcoming assembly elections.
Kejriwal held a press conference on Friday and stated the BJP submitted applications to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to delete thousands of voter registrations in several constituencies, including Shahdara, Janakpuri and Laxmi Nagar.
“The BJP has filed an application to delete the names of 11,018 voters in the Shahdara area, but when we cross-checked that application on 500 names, 75 per cent of people were still living there, but their names can be deleted from the electoral roll,” Kejriwal said.
He claimed the Shahdara constituency, which AAP won by approximately 5,000 votes in the previous election, is seeing roughly 11,000 voters facing potential removal, many of whom he alleges are AAP supporters.
Kejriwal requested the ECI to publish all related applications on its website for transparency by Friday evening.
