ASI team surveys 2nd temple in 2 days in Sambhal – Times of India

Bareilly: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) conducted its second survey in Sambhal in two days, examining an ancient Kalki temple near the Mughal-era Jama masjid on Saturday.
The ASI survey aims to determine the temple’s age, believed to be the site where Lord Vishnu will incarnate as Kalki in Kalyug, as per Hindu scriptures. The team, which stayed at the site for about 15 minutes, also inspected ‘Krishna Koop,’ an ancient well located within the temple premises.
“There is a mention of Sambhal, its temples and ancient wells in the Bhoomi chapter 12 of the ‘Skanda Purana’. It is for the first time the ASI has surveyed this place,” said Kalki temple priest Mahendra Prasad Sharma.
The surveys were initiated following a Dec 14 request by Sambhal SDM Vandana Mishra to the archaeology directorate for a study of the region’s ancient pilgrimage sites and wells. “The ASI team has taken samples from the Kalki temple and the ancient well. We provided them with the required assistance during the survey,” Mishra said.
On Friday, a four-member ASI team had surveyed 19 ancient wells and five pilgrimage sites, including Bhadrak Ashram, Swargdeep, and Chakrapani. They collected carbon dating samples from a well in the Shiva Kartikeya temple complex. Sambhal DM Rajender Pensiya said the ASI team is expected to submit its findings soon.
In another development, the excavation of an ancient stepwell in the Laxmanganj area of Chandausi town on Saturday revealed four room-like spaces beneath the structure.
Tehsildar Dheerendra Singh said the tehsil administration, with assistance from the municipal council, initiated the excavation following a report from a revenue department accountant about a pond-like structure beneath the well. “The work is ongoing to know more about the structure,” Singh said.
