At least 40 soldiers were killed and others wounded when jihadist group Boko Haram attacked a Chad military unit on Sunday. The extremist organization targeted the military base in Chad’s Lake region which is close to the Nigerian border, the government said on Monday.
The presidency’s communique said that “A garrison housing more than 200 soldiers was targeted by members of Boko Haram” in the western region of Chad late Sunday night. The attack “tragically left about 40 people dead,” the statement said.
The Boko Haram armed uprising, which began in northeast Nigeria in 2009, has killed more than 350,000 by some counts and forced millions to flee their homes.
